I kinda gave this one half a spin. For whatever reason I haven't really got all that into these guys but I have a few of their albums. I'll probably go through this one again but lately the new Aborym has been taking up most of my time.

Great review. This is the best black metal album this year imo, but I expected nothing less. I see it as a sort of middleground between SMRC and Fas, which is great for me because, even though I appreciate Fas a lot, I find it too dry and horrific to listen to it often. So I'm glad that instead of going further that path, they decided to swing back a bit towards the days of SMRC, which imo still stands as one of the highest peaks of black metal. Paracletus comes close too.

Really it's the kind of album that if you're going to get into it you need to give more than kinda half a listen to...

Yeah. Maybe I will. It'll at least come up on random on my black metal playlist at some point.

Because that's how black metal was meant to be heard? It's not fucking pop singles. Give the damn album a listen... I wish I had it.

Yeah I hate to agree with Ken and all his stuff about people not appreciating music properly any more but you're making me think he has a point, Evil Dead...

BM album of the year isn't an outlandish statement, really... with this band you either don't click with what they are doing at all, or else you do and in that case there is nobody else capable of matching them in today's scene.

I'd say it's ok for starters, although SMRC would probably be better.

Deathspell Omega are not the sort of band one can casually listen to, at least in my opinion when I finally get around to digesting Paracletus I want to be able to really soak it in. At least thats how things were when I first heard SMRC, I thought Fase ite was just something else, and I still can't quite put my finger on it.

I find Kenose to be their most accessible output. Relatively speaking, of course.

One album I can't really bring myself to actually get through and it's the end of the world. I'm sorry I have yet to make it further than halfway into this disc but I don't really have much of a desire to.

I have every Deathspell Omega album because you guys have taken a shit over the band since I've been here. I don't really like them. Every now and then I've tried to give them another shot, including with this album. What more would you like me to say?

Use google for ten seconds and get it. If you're the black metal wizard that says we can't listen to a single song at a time, why don't you have it? lol

I don't think it's really up to you to determine how music was intended to be heard. I have a huge amount of black metal and I like to listen to my playlist on random, and I'll stop and pause on an album if I feel in the mood for it. I also listen to full albums at a time. It just depends.

You guys pick at the weirdest little details.

Haha, this is the most over-hyped, overrated and underwhelming black metal in recent memory.
I am a firm believer in not following the herd; 100,000 voices of praise means nothing if it is annoying and/or mediocre to my ears and brain.

If you don't like them, you don't like them.
What else is there to say?
I find it amusing how this band is pushed so hard by everyone, as if those that don't care for them haven't given them a proper listen or something.

It's good obviously, but I found myself liking the slower more atmospheric moments the best. My list of killing songs would be completely different.

Deathspell Omega was always overhyped. I'll have to check this gold piece at some point though.

Yeah, it is good, but frankly a bit underwhelming--songs are too short--it is is missing a 'Carnal Malefactor' type epic. I love the technicality of the stuff but they've strayed very far from traditional black metal, perhaps too far.

Technicality, if that's what you want to call it, really belongs more in the sphere of death metal than in black metal.
Of, course there are exceptions, as always.

I've listened to everything by Deathspell up to their last release; I had heard them quite a bit before their supposed magnum opus( SMRC ) was released (in other words, before all the hype) and they did nothing but bore and irritate me. I honestly don't get what is supposed to be to special about these guys.
