I've only listened to this one twice so far, but I don't think it's as good as the debut. Something just seems to be lacking. Maybe it needs more listens.

I agree, and I think I know what's lacking (at least in my mind). I have written a review, it will be posted on the Metal CD Ratings site July 29th. :wink:

I haven't read the review on this site, but I can tell you the score/rating will be different. :?

Clint, I really hope youre not going to rate this Epica disc low, because it is great! I generally like your reviews so I'm actually interested in what you think. As long as it gets 90%!! :wink:

First off, I'm glad you like my reviews. :D
Thank you for your support of myself and the Metal CD Ratings site... much appreciated!

The CD will not get a "low" rating, though not as high as other CDs in this style. Remember, I'm VERY into female vocal music, so I have a large collection of bands in this style, and I feel the new Epica is missing something.
You'll enjoy the review I'm sure... some band comparisons, etc. --- even if you aren't happy with the rating. :wink:
I'll also be publishing a review for a new band Osiris that blends gothic metal and power metal, but it's just an EP they've released.

Check it out, will be July 29th for sure. :)

P.S. Just had an update, new band Burning in Hell, and others... :wink:

Quick update...

For those interested in a second opinion, I just published my Epica review on the Metal CD Ratings site! :wink:

I also just read Ian's review on this site (nice job! :wink: ). He did a great job on describing the music, but in the end, we had different thoughts on the quality of the CD.

I have heard of Epica, but never got around to hearing The Phantom Agony. As i am trying to list my best of for 2005, i downloaded Consign To Oblivion as i thought i may have it in the list.
So this is my first time hearing them, i'm only halfway through, but i can tell you that i am already blown away. This album, even half way through, is fantastic! I dont know if TPA is better, or different in some way, but what i am hearing with this album is pure gold. Exactly how i like my symphonic gothic/power metal. I want more, damn it!

Epica = not gothic metal.
They're more plain symphonic metal with power and gothic influences.
Definately not gothic though.

Finally. Somebody but me gets it. This is exactly what I keep saying, this is NOT gothic metal per se, and whatever it is, is not done well either.....
