Well, usually the mix isn't the vocalist's competence: besides, I don't really believe he needs to multi-layer his vocals to sound passable (I've seen him live with Marduk, he's a bit static on stage but vocal-wise the man is a brute force unleashed upon mankind), rather to to give them more depth and expression. It's not that uncommon, and I certainly prefer double tracking over crappy electronic effects or various other cheesy studio manipulations.
