These guys are super cool. I have been listening to them for a few years now. There is in fact a great deal of melody on "Miss Machine," so I doubt that those of you who claim that DEP are "just noise" have heard this album. Any person who would claim that these guys are not technical obviously does not play an instrument (or at least doesn't play one well). These guys create something special; open-minded people should give "Miss Machine" a listen. Great Review.

Yes. They are VERY technical. They do some very crazy time signatures, and switch between them fast. This is much harder than just playing a solo or something. Trust me.

The other day I was listening to Calculating Infinity and I was thinking it is a very good album, but the thing is I can't play this one very often, it just isn't the type of album I would hear everyday, I find DEP more as a "concept" than music per se.

Is Miss Machine more "musical"? Before I buy I would like to know if I'll actually listen to it more than once every two months.

deathkvlt,

Judging by the situation you described in the post above, I think that you would really like "Miss Machine." This album is more musical than "Calculating Infinity," and it is more song oriented than their debut album. Their EP with Mike Patton has really influenced their songwriting, and the change is for the better. DEP used to build their songs around their technical proficiency, but now they work their instrumental ability into their songs. There are clean vocals on about 3/4 of the songs on 'Miss Machine," but the chaotic parts are just as intense as they were on their debut. DEP has laced their original sound with that of Faith No More, discovered 4/4 time signatures, and added in the presence of synthesizer sounds that remind me of 1980's pop/rock (although the synth sounds are not used that often). DEP have discovered dynamics, and they are all the better for it.

Hey man, the Dillinger site has the first four songs from the album on a flash player at the bottom. They're pretty decent quality. Listen to em for yourself and decide if it's worth buyinh.

It's kind of a slang term for chaotic technical metal.

Actually I think this album sounds about half noise and half music, like they tried to emulate System of a Down and failed miserably. Yes, the 'music' is actually very good, but damn that noise sucks some serious ass. Or maybe it appeals to people with certain mental conditions which is probably most of US kids nowadays.

I christen thee bi-polar metal.

The "noise" is quite beautiful to someone with a musician's ear.

I find "(insert argument) is good to someone with a musician's ear" is a musical arguement faux pas.

It's good to someone who likes the genre, or just likes where they're coming from with the music, or just to those who like it. But you can't arbitrarily say that someone who has an ear for instruments will automatically like a band.

I've acutally never heard Dillenger Espace Plan, but are they really as uber-chaotic as this argument is making them out to be?

Well, preview the album and see what you think. I personally find it very chaotic and difficult to listen to.

And as for a musician's ear - what kind of musician? I am guessing a drummer. I have played various styles of guitar for over 10 years and still there is nothing for me here.

Well, I misworded that. You may not like it still if you're a musician, but you wouldn't call it "noise".

I think of Dillinger... as the boyband of grindcore. I mean look at the pic of them that Terrorizer had a couple of months ago. Sounds bad nowadays too. Some songs are listenable, most are shite.

Are these guys just the biggest hype in "extreme" metal or what? I just don't get them. On the Relapse Contaminated Festival DVD, it looked like they headlined the 2nd day, but they didn't even belong on stage with the likes of Burnt by the Sun, Pig Destroyer, or High on Fire.

And it's not like I don't like "noisecore" and related metal or whatever you want to call it. I think Coalesce, Botch, Converge, Cephalic Carnage all rule, but Dillinger just doesn't have the heart and soul that these other bands do. They just sound sterile and manufactured in my opinion -- I'm not saying they are, but that's just what they sound like to me.
