I liked every Rush album after the first spin. I didnt need time for the album to "grown on me". That's a bull shit excuse for, "this album is really crap, but I like the band so much that I'm gonna keep listening until I find all the really subtle hard to find, minimal good stuff, and then talk about how I think the album is good to uphold the name of a band I love". So its basically bull shit. If there's nothing interesting on the first spin, even one or two things, then you've wasted your money and you are in danger of becoming a fan boy who touts every release as being "good enough for me". Mind you this is just an opinion, but I feel very strongly about this one.

It's not about finding the minimal good stuff, it's about changing your opinion on the stuff you did not like at first. By the way, FYI I'm definitely more of a fan of individual albums rather than bands (i.e. not what you'd call a "fanboy").
Also, suppose a band radically changes their sound on one album (case in point: Metallica with Load). During your first couple listens, you'll probably be wondering, "What the hell is this?" But then, after a few more, you'll be used to the "new sound" and come to appreciate it more.
As for Black Rain, I finally listened to the whole thing yestarday on Napster. Pretty much every fault Down To Earth had is here. There are two or three standout songs (namely the first two songs and The Almighty Dollar), and the rest is plodding/boring filler. I do like how Ozzy's compensating for his mellowing out with age by trading in the heaviness of his first two Zakk Wylde albums for a more trippy/psychadelic style. But he and the rest of the band just sound so disinterested it's not even funny. The riffs are generic heavy metal riffs that
just aren't catchy. Believe it or not, this album's actually making me start to appreciate Down To Earth a little more since, at least on that album, Ozzy attempted to spruce up his sound a little more (although that album still gets a Miss from me for having only about three or four memorable songs).
I will give Black Rain another chance. But based on listen number 1, I'm pretty unimpressed.
