I can relate to this author feeling different for her love of metal. Im a 39 yr. old black metal-head. But where are all the nice metal-head girls? The girls in my city (Paterson, NJ) all listen to gansta-rap, hip hop and r&b! At concerts, Im all about the music, so I wouldnt really try to talk to the girls there. It just seems extra difficult for a black dude who listens to heavy metal, because you are usually crucified by your own people for your musical tastes. (But you know what? I will NEVER stop listening to metal!)
You're not alone...
But yes, you'll see a unicorn or velociraptor before you find a black metal head.
But conversely, do metal crowds accept various ethnicities and females?
Personally, I've never felt out-of-place at a show; just the opposite, in fact. I was one of the bare handful of people at my (women's) college who even knew what metal is, and the only (and when I say only, I mean one and only) metal chick who looked the part. I knew of exactly two other women who even owned metal shirts, and I was the only one who wore them on a regular basis. A couple of times, I wouldn't want to go to class the day after a show because I was tired of standing out so much from everyone else, but of course I'd never change the way I dress just to feel like I fit in.

I know some metal chicks who don't look metal. Than again, I also know a bunch of goregrind brutal death metal chicks who look like goregring brutal death metal chicks. Suffice to say I'd be too scared to sleep with em.
Wuss.
