There is very simple explanation for all this. When "people" go see Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Black Sababth, very few have heard most of their material, There is a good chance maybe half the poeple there have a handful of albums with very few having the latest album. So obviously based on that they have a lot more reason to play new material than old. If it is really good and the quality actually surprises, people will notice and might just go out and buy it. They probably already own the seminal releases already. Bands love the in-between-songs banter to tell you that this is defnitely on the new album.

Bands get sick of old material and if they are really excited about what they did in the studio, they are going to want to play those songs almost in an atempt to prove they are at their best.

And sometimes they are contractually obligated to play a certain amount of new material for promotional purposes and the bands manager absolutely loves the idea of promoting the new material because often the band's royalties and fees get bigger every record, making the manager more money. The band probably doesn't have to play anything form a new album, but the catch is that the label might decide they can spare say, 10 grand a show if they do play the majority of an album. I am under the impression that performing a song live may require one to play royalties and obviously this rarely happens, but most of the time the label owns half the publishing, they might feel like enforcing such money if they feel the band isn't doing what they can to sell records. If anyone knows anything about that, fill me in.

The deal with the anniversary albums is that for a lot if not the majority of bands, only one album was really commercially successful. So if you knwo for a fact you are going to hear it, it could convince them to go buy a ticket. IT guarantees most of the crowd will get to hear songs they knwo and like for at least 30-60 minutes

I'm seeing them July 6th in Ottawa. I didn't bother reading everything in this thread, I don't want you all to rain on my parade!

I'm excited!

However, I did read that they've changed the set list a bit. I'll let you all know when I see 'em.

I would like to take the opportunity to apologize to one and all who I may have offended with my rather snide comments in this thread. It's been one hell of a shit week and I wrongfully became sarcastic in here.

As for Iron Maiden, I've just become dreadfully bored with Maiden's older stuff because I've been listening to it since 1982.

Gonna watch Maiden in Bergen 11th of August. That setlist didn't look too exciting though. Still, will be one hell of a show. As always.

After having seen the show, I disagree somewhat.

First of all, I love the accoustic intros. It's kind of their trademark now, and it's not like they are poorly written .. they are very catchy and they sound great.

The new song was allright, but nothing special. Kind of made me realize how good the last 3 albums have been. Although I was kind of taken away by the concept conveyed by the onscreen imagery - the new "El Dorado" is not a city of gold, but a city of industrial raw materials.

I kind of agree with their choice of tracks off the new albums too. They work live whether it be from a driving riff or a singalong chorus or a dramatic song structure. My only change would have been to put in Paschendale which remains my fav new Maiden song.

They apparently heard some of the setlist criticism as Wrathchild was played around 4th or 5th.

So overall, people seemed to like it, even though the largest noise was preserved for the classics. I know I left there liking the newer stuff more than I did coming in.

They played Paschendale in Dallas. I agree that's it's one of, if not the best song they've done on the last 3 albums.
