You say that like its a bad think

I expect progression from Tool, not just songs. Undertow to Aenima is a huge change, Aenima to Lateralus is a huge change, this is just a dull Lateralus retread with more artsy prog-rock thrown in at the last minute.

I dont think their sound has ever really seen a huge change, its always been quite gradual with them taking some of their last album and mixing it with new stuff, which is what they did on 10,000 Days

The production bugs me, the guitars/overall sound (to me) sounds like Lateralus. I liked Lateralus alot though, but from a band like Tool and 5 fucking years in between albums, I expected something new and exciting, not some bullshit Lateralus B-sides. Nothing grabs me, it fails in every possible way. In short... What the shit?

...no. Undertow to Aenima is a monster change, the arrangements are more sophisticated, not everything is tuned in drop-D, more maturity, quite a bit more experimentation with sonics and whatnot... onward, onward.

In any event, if this is the case, why are there so many complaints about the sameness? Not just from me, but from quite a few professional publications?

The front end of the album is the only thing that hit the spot for me. Vicarious, Jambi, and 10000 days. Right in Two was ok, but The Pot and Rosetta Stoned was just a bit too out there in both content and musical style for me to get into. Lateralus and Aenima were much better IMO. :(

everyone was expecting a lot from Tool, so theres a lot of complaints... I've heard just as many, if not more, people say that they've evolved as say they haven't. And for the most part they're people whos opinions I respect more than random reviewers

Album of the year so far for me along with devin townsend's Synchestra - this album truley takes the listener to crazy places it takes like 5 spinds to really get into it, but as of now this is my fav tool with lateralus - people giving it bad scores or bashign , just dont GET IT, and dont know the concept of letting music grow on you, cuz once this one does you'll listen over and over and it gets better everytime. TOOL

Ahh, my favourite retort to people not liking something. They just don't "get it," or can't appreciate it as a result of some fault of theirs. Well done.

you can say that about anyone who dislikes any album, of course they don't get the appeal if they dont like the music.

i was actually listening to Lateralus today and it increased my respect for this album. Even comparing the similarities, like Vicarious to Schism, it shows that Tool are better at what they're doing... they just sound tighter, clearer and more consise with their ideas...

Out of all of Tool's albums, I find this one to be there weakest. Too much filler, weird experimental stuff going on. Not enough consistency of any kind other than it being pertty boring

Hmm, I seem to be on the opposite side of the fence to you and Ken on this one. Aside from the interludes, of which Lateralus has a similar amount and Aenema has in spades, I didn't find any filler. Which tracks didn't you like? I think it's confusing that they had what are essentially intros (Lost Keys, Wings for Marie) as seperate tracks, but it may be that people would have been put off buying an album with only 7 odd tracks, not knowing the running time.

(looking forward to a long and interesting debate about this one :) )

Zad: Yes that's Lateralus

Radagast: Just maintaining continuity, they've always been labeled that on this site courtesy of Jay, and to be honest I wouldn't like to attempt to stick 'em in a genre.

Brahm_K: Maybe the next Tool album due in 2012 will be a thrash effort, cross your fingers.

By the way Al, this was a great review! :D

I like the first six songs, then the albums starts to go in different directions. I can even tolerate track 8. This album might grow on me with more listens as with the past two releases. I feel the guitar sound is closer to the EP and Undertow, as is a song like "The Pot". "Vicarious" sounds like something off of Aenima; an instant classic.....

Well, I went ahead and bought Aenima today. I'll listen to it in the car tomorrow and let y'all know what I think.

I like them very much. Hell On Earth was one of the best albums of 2005.

I usually put this album on as background music while I work on assignments because it does not hold my attention at all.

Pretentious crap that it is.

Aenima is an amazing album! Hands down, this is far better than Undertow. I'll definitely be buying Lateralus and 10,000 Days in the not-so-distant future.
