Haven't heard much death metal, but I do know that Stanne is pretty damn good...my favorite out of the Gothenburg vocalists.

Tomas Lindberg is way better than him imo, and the guy from Soilwork when he screamed his lungs out like a possessed demon

that's just who I can think of from Swedish melodeath bands

If we're talking best growler my favorites are Glen Benton with Vital Remains, Lord Worm, Barney Greenway and Peter Tägtgren with Bloodbath. Corpsegrinder also deserves a mention.

In the melodeth genre it's probably Johan Lindstrand of The Crown.

I haven't heard most of them, but Glen Benton and Corpsegrinder? Better than Stanne? You're taking the piss.

Glenn Benton/Corpsegrinder are pretty hard to compare to Stanne since they're just brootal while Stanne tries to be like catchy/emo with his growls.

Some of my favorites:

Swano - towering bellows - his voice simply hovers over music
Stanne - emotional "singing" growls - he can be a slithering snake one moment, booming behemoth another, almost crying another moment
I like Swano's clean croons better, but at a couple of shows I told Stanne he should continue using his. Just give them all a middle finger and do it, if the music/mood calls for it. Glad he listened on Misery's Crown :)
Lindberg - just one caustic angry son-of-a-bitch

Underrated - Niilo Sevanen (Insomnium)
Sleeper - Johan Hegg (Amon Amarth), pure Viking, got less angry with time
Overrated - Friden, Strid

Strid's screams on their last 4 albums or so have sucked, but I think on the first two he kicked major ass.

Misery's Crown is my fav track off fiction and it's up there with the best of their material. Simply and awesome song, and that is mostly due to Stanne's vocals.

As far as growlers go they are among the best. Stanne isn't even a proper growler, how can you think he's the best? His whiny vocals have nothing on the likes of people I mentioned.

And you don't know napalm death and cryptopsy? Don't talk to me about growlers then.

This song is a little too Depeche Mode for me, but it is a great change of pace. Without songs like this, Inside the Particle Storm and Icipher the whole album would be like Nothing to No One, but then it wouldn't be DT, and there was not a chance of that happening.

When he growls, he's not whiny. It's just that unlike many other growlers he has the ability to show a wider range of emotions than just anger, unlike those you mentioned. And his clean vox fit in the songs he sings. Dark Tranquillity are way fucking far from emo. Clearly you've been lucky enough to avoid tha last MCR single.

Oh, and Johan Hegg does kick ass as does Anders Jacobsson of Draconian. :dio:

A man called Joe Collins who was the former vocalist for this amazing Death Metal band called Corpsing was the best growler I've ever heard. You couldn't understand a word, but you didn't want to. Amazing.

Hmmm. They did have an old track on their MySpace - http://www.myspace.com/corpsing - but it appears to be gone now. Some newer tracks are there, though. If you REALLY want, I could send you a track or two of the older material, but it'll take a day or two (at work atm).

Is it that worth it?
