A funny and powerful ride for sure  . The storyline is genius and unique. I'd a very good time listening to this album :dio:
The tune "By your Command" is awesome, especially the last two minutes.

90/100

It took me like 5 listens to focus on the music rather than the storyline, but this is an awesome album, glad to see it finally got a review here. I thought the ending was great, and it also fits in with the album's concept.

I do hope Devin brings in a full band for whatever releases he does in the future though because I think that backing musicians give his music a more full/dynamic sound :o

I'd have to say that the Punky Bruster connection is present here, mainly in the storyline. Punky Bruster, for all its silliness, was actually a comedic concept album of sorts. I still can't believe he wrote and recorded that whole album in a week. Haha.

Anyway, Ziltoid kicks all kinds of ass. Devin is simply amazing! I can't wait for his next release, some sort of symphonic metal opus. It's gonna be awesome, that's for sure.

This one is a real winner, and as I keep saying, a nice amalgamation of many of Devin's previous directions. SYL style aggression here and there, Terria style Ambience on Solar Winds and "Color Your World," Ocean Machine-type moody melodic grrove on Hyperdrive, Physicist and Infinity's batshit insanity popping up here and there.

Win! :dio:

I agree, there is a little of every era of Devy on this one. One of my favorites of the year.

Symphonic Devy  ?! OOOOOOOOOOO... :dio:

Christ All-f'n-Mighty I wish that I could enjoy this dudes music. But I can't.Listening multiple times through nearly every cd he has made in side projects and not,the only song I have ever enjoyed and even then I can live without is Love off of Alien.I tried this cd too and nothing clicks with me.My friends love Devin and his stuff, but damn,I guess some things just aren't meant to be.Glad you guys dig it though.

Yeah, that's what he says now, though. In fact, this is exactly what he said:

Quote:
yo...

A hugely complicated, dynamic metal 'symphony' thing...mainly instrumental...(except for the choir vox type shit) 72 minutes

I've already started it, and it's far over the top...the most complex thing to date.

tentative title: 2. (Zilly was 1)...whatever it's called, it's going to have a '2' in the upper right hand corner.

Maybe by Dec?

Seriously...FAR over the top...TONS of guitar...TONS of solos...TONS of layers, some Devlab / Hummer bits, some beauty, some hell...no breaks between songs...some super clean quiet bits...

No Ziltoid wackiness... I see it as a real DIY honest, adult thing. I want to write symphonies, but I'm a metal head, so here we go. I find it really natural.

Making music without touring IS a break as far as I'm concerned...

And 24 minutes later...

Quote:
Then again, it might just end up totally different.

Who knows?

I'm inspired either way.

Take care.

So who knows! Haha. And I want to give this guy props again, because this cover is excellent:

I love that damn thing! Makes me wish Devin would put out that acoustic album he's mentioned before.

Those are two of his weakest ones. Everybody check out Ocean Machine and Terria!!!

Yeah, those are The Devin Townsend Band rather than just Devin Townsend, and there is a difference. I'm not sure what it is really, just that Synchestra is a bit hit and miss. Terria is just a beautiful soundscape, worthy of anyone's attention.

I'm still saying Infinity is my favorite album by him though. It's what got me started on his music waaaaaay back...

Terria was the second one I heard (outside SYL) and the first to make me go "....wow." Synchestra was the first I heard and I really wanted to love it, but there's just something about that album I can't put my finger on...

It's deep, man. :P It's actually taken me a long time to put that one up there with the rest. It's a different kind of album, lots to absorb. Personally, while I like the album, I think Accelerated Evolution is the worst. That of course is ten times betters than most bands' best, but it's the one I listen to least.

Synchestra has mastering/volume issues (quiet parts too loud, loud parts too quiet), but still has some amazing stuff (Triump and Pixillate  ). Terria, Accelerated Evolution, Ocean Machine, Infinity, and Ziltoid are all awesome though.

Love the Ziltoid album. Then again, I like most of the stuff Devin's involved with.
