Strange it still is my favourite album by Rush, maybe because it was the first Rush I bought. Anthem still gives me chills every time I hear it.

Anthem is still one of my fav songs of Rush.
I think it deserves classic status. Well, it has Rivendel (one of the worst songs of Rush, with I think i'm going bald), but 2112 has Tears (mediocre) and nobody denies his classic status.
But skipping Rivendel (and Making Memories, good but nothing special), all the other songs are masterpieces.

Not investigated this era of Rush yet. I really must.

You really must indeed! Except for the 90's & 00's everything Rush did is worth the time and effort.

On Fly By Night, not their best but still a good album. I have to say the late 70's to late 80's are still my favourite era.

I'd give Fly By Night a 70 or 75.

Rivendell sucks. Nuff said.

I am also going to disagree that any period of rush is worth skipping. They are one of those bands that if you like the way they do things you should like every album.

I love Rivendell, and I almost agree with you about every Rush album being good, but they did write Test For Echo and for the life of me I can't get into it. I've owned it for almost 2 years and is the only Rush album I would give a failing grade to. Thankfully they really came to their senses and have released 3 amazing albums in the 2000's so far.

Test for echo was very much phoned in, but considering the quality of the personnel, the results were much better than average, especially at the time. I chalk that album up to the band not having anyone decent to draw any inspiration from at the time.
