I don't know why, but I find Deadwing to be a more captivating album than In Absentia. I would've also further mentioned the heavy Tool influence in Porcupine Tree (just listen to the chorus for Shallow on Deadwing - sounds like it came straight out of Aenima).

Good review, nonetheless. Oh, and btw, I like Wedding Nails. :)

I think you were a bit hard on this, Alex, but it was my first (and to date only) album from them.

This is one of my very favourite albums as of lately, Trains is their best song ever, and I can't se why you dislike Wedding Nails that much.

Easily a 95+ in my eyes.

And I haven't noticed they re-used the Trains-riff in Fear of a Blank Planet, please tell me where.

EDIT: Found it, Sentimental about 4 mins in.

I think it was James that reviewed it, Zad.

Either way, yeah, I think he was a bit hard. I loved all of the songs equally, and thought that everything flowed well. It's not as good as Deadwing, but it comes pretty damned close.

Oh yeah, Wedding Nails kills. One of my favorite instrumentals ever.

Don't have this album yet, but I've yet to be disappointed by a PT release.

Mintrude's name is Alex James, we call him James so as not to get confused with Alex Senior.

Is Deadwing a good next step from PT, or should I go for Fear Of A Blank Planet?

Oh. Shit. I knew that.

I say go for Deadwing next. It's not much of a progression from In Absentia, which means it would be easier to get into. Plus, it has Lazarus.

Meh. I'm personally a much bigger fan of the early albums than of Deadwing and FoaBP. Signify, The Sky Moves Sideways and especially Up the Downstair are much more suited to some laid back listening than the quirky stuff of the later albums, and you can get them in expanded 2-disc editions for the price of a regular album.

Gosh, I really like this album. 73's a bit harsh, imo, but w/e.

I agree about Wedding Nails, I don't think it's all that special. But the rest of the songs are pretty much "omfg love"

I have their last 3 and the live dvd and would rate them all about the same . Yeah they are talented and all that but I don't see what all the fuss is about PT they don't really stand out for me just a good solid band.

Both are good although I find Fear of a Blank Planet to flow better as a whole. Can't really go wrong with any of those two. If you haven't yet you might want to check out Stupid Dream and Lightbulb sun out, some of PT best material.

I also have signify, but i'm not a huge fan of it and any album preceding it, in terms of release. Signify has too many instrumentals not enough singing and is hard to get into IMO.
It is super experimental IMO, and if you enjoy this sort of thing you'll love it, which evidently is not really my case. You really have to be in the right mindset to enjoy it.
