I would say they're more of a progressive thrash metal band, or something like that. There's no hardcore present to deem it metalcore.

Actually, that applies to their previous albums. I haven't heard this one. I guess they could have completely shifted styles, but I would like to think they didn't. If not, they're definitely not metalcore. Great band, though.

I'd say metalcore works for Byzantine. afaik there's a lot of metalcore that doesn't have much to do with hardcore.

I thought Serpents was decent (great guitar solos) but had a little too much chugchug riffs.

Dude, you can't have metalcore without hardcore. Just because some sniveling little e-nerds out there are too stupid to think before they write something doesn't make something fact.

EDIT: Not talking about you, Dylan.

Yeah, they're not really metalcore.

Might grab And They Shall and this, decent band.

I'd say metal-archives tag is spot on... Post-Thrash/Groove Metal, it's definetely not metalcore.

There are still a number of breakdowns here that made me choose the tag.

Post-Thrash sounds like one of those over-extending genre tags that seems like a really vague label.

It's not textbook metalcore at all, but I think that is close enough. It's not like I called them death, black, power or something completely wrong.

But anyway, aside from the genre confusion, does the review make sense?

I had listened to this back in February once or twice and liked it a little. A found it last month and started listening to it. I love this album. I usually don't like modern American Groove/Metalcore bands, but Byzantine sounds so original and progressive. 85/100 at least. One of the best Groove/Thrash Metal bands I have listened to along with Meshuggah and Gojira.
