Man... are you serious... this is the same JB as in the Spiritual Beggars? I feel even worse, now.

I love the vocals but I really can't seem to get into Grand Magus much, despite all the good stuff I've heard about them. I think it's the doominess and production that is bothering me most. It just sounds so muddy (bass-y?) and raw.. maybe it's just me. Then again, I personally don't like Sabbath much at all (although they have all my respect and then some)... so it's just not my taste, I guess.

As for SB, no sign of a new album or anything on their myspace. I do hope they keep up, though. I love that band.

If you are referring to their older albums when you mention production, this iisn't anything like it. Not at all.

One of the best albums of this year, normaly i get dissapointed when a band change styles but Grand Magus had done it so graduallly that it does not bother me at all and besides its fucking heavy metal so i couldnt care less, anyways yeah this album is really good, is on the same league as Wolfs Return IMO and thats saying much, 83/100 for me, great review thomas.

Oh yeah? I might give this one a spin, then. Yeah, the only ones I had heard are Monument and the self-titled. I had heard Wolf's Return and it just didn't grab me, although it didn't seem as bad.. just perhaps a bit doomy. For some reason, I like classic doom but bands that mix doom with a power/heavy sound (kind of like Mirage Garden) don't seem to do it for me. I will try this album, though. :)

As I mentioned in my review, they have almost completely abandoned their doom roots with some exceptions. This is heavy metal. It's not even comparable to their earliest releases.

+1 theyre Heavy Metal with little pieces of doom now but honestly if you didnt like their first two releases (their best IMO) and Wolf's return i don't think youre gonna like this one.

Well who knows... I personally like both this and their debut, but I know people who hates their debut and absolutely loves this... So there is still hope for Esiel I think

Well, I did listen to it earlier and what do you know, it's not so bad. It does feels a bit less doomy (reminds me somewhat of a Mirage Garden with a dirtier production). The opener, the title track and Silver Into Steel are the ones that stood out for me. To be honest it's not something I'd listen to everyday but it's definitely not as bad as I remember.

NP: Amon Amarth - Varyags of Miklagaard :dio:

Liked this, not quite as much as Thom but a great album nonetheless.
