Zad, you are right about many things but personally I feel you way overrate this record. IMO it is the best Ephel Duath album (haven't heard Phormula, only Rephormula) but still not a 93. Maybe in the 80s. They remind me a bit of Sikth in the sense that they obviously can do incredibly cool things but I always feel like they underrachieve... maybe it's me just being too demanding.

But you are definitely right that they do the "jazz" thing a lot more authentically than most other bands that get labelled the same.

Saw them live a couple of years back which was wicked (probly more fun than their records), although horror of horrors the stupid venue fucked up and people who arrived on time were still queuing outside halfway through their set

Then, they went off, only to be replaced by that definition of cookie-cutter metalcore, Poison the Well, who got to play twice as long.

Glad I'm not the only one to have noticed Zadok's tendency to overrate albums...

This is a solid 80/85 though and, indeed, Ephel Duath's finest delivery.

Often I agree with him, but not on this one. Don't worry, we shall no doubt fight about it later.

i agree with Zad's score. i listened to this yesterday and felt sad that they'll never make anything this good again without Tolomei and Piovesan. Pain Necessary to Know had cool sounding stuff going on but it never has the emotional impact that Painter's Palette does; i've only listened to Through My Dog's Eyes once so far but it seems to be in the same category.

Eh? Name ten!

Rephormula = Phormula with some bonus tracks, Charlesy. Underachieve? They do excellent things on this album, I can see where you think that for Pain Necessary To Know but not this album. Still, you got moaned at in the other ED review thread so it must be my turn...
