You're being a tad harsh on this one, Zad. I do agree that if you look at their past works, it's not a masterpiece but it's much better than I expected. I do enjoy atmospheric stuff to begin with and this one is much more focused and less experimental than Home was.

That said, I've got my own gripes about it. The intro is unfitting to me and I skip it almost everytime. I wouldn't have closed the album with A Constant Run either. It's boring to me compared to some of the stuff like Capital of Nowhere or Pale Traces.

All in all, I'd give it an 80, as I love the sound/genre and Silje's voice fits like a glove.

Perhaps, but it did feel at times like the band were on autopilot, and whilst I found it perfectly listenable (and Silje's voice is similar enough to Anneke's to make the chance hardly noticeable, as I said in the review) it took no risks whatsoever, the experimental parts on past Gathering albums being what elevated them above other bands for me.

That is true, though. Although, it's those same experiments that made Home a quirky album. And to be fair, you seem to hold How to Measure a Planet in much higher regard than I do. I loved the atmospheric half but hated the second CD, so don't listen to me too much... :P

Also, I find it a great album but worthy to be put next Mandylion or Nighttime Birds? Or even if_then_else? Certainly not.

Still waiting for this and the exclusive EP to arrive. I paid $40 for those fuckers, so I didn't bother downloading first.

The samples sounded great, though. Their idea of guitar-based--or however they described this album--was a long way off, though. Mandylion is guitar-based; this one sounds like it has guitars. Huge difference.

Either way, looking forward to hearing it when it arrives. And the new vocalist is perfect. I always described Octavia Sperati as Nighttime Birds-era The Gathering. Great band, too.

Octavia Sperati was not as interesting or original as NB-era The Gathering IMO although I see where you're coming from.

I've only given this a couple of listens so don't really want to say for sure but it seems a bit sedate to me. Less dull than Home but still not too exciting. "Nice" is right, I guess.

I really liked the laid-back nature of Home. I thought it was a fitting exit for Anneke.
