I like this album so far but Sons of Northern Darkeness is still the best Immortal album, let alone one of the best black metal albums ever!

Nice review James, I agree on the big influence that Bathory has on this album, which is good in my book. I don't know if it's my fanboyism but I would rate this in the mid 90's. Anyway, the album is a blast, top 5 of the year easily, not only in BM, but in Metal in general, and Unearthly Kingdom will be a future classic in Immortal repertoire.

It's all a matter of opinion, but I'd take At The Heart of Winter over Sons. I love them both of course.

Great review, and I'd have to agree with just about everything said. I absolutely love Unearthly Kingdom.

Yup. This album, based on the first listen I just had moments ago, sounds more like the I album than Immortal. Like Between Two Worlds but with the rocking stuff stripped away and leaving...well, Bathory.

I hear Immortal too. I love this one. I am on music overload right now (just got a huge shipment in), so I'll save my "album of the year" comment I was going to make. I need to listen to everything I have first. This is killer though.
