Well, Dordeduh has a
lot to live up to.
I was surprised by how little metal there was--nearly half the album is ambient or folk. That said, the ambient/folk is excellent, I just would have liked a bit more metal. I thought track four, Ochiul Inimii, is where everything came together, a touch of Opeth and Enslaved in the guitarwork, prog drumming and blastbeats, along with the folk instrumentation. It's almost unfair to the rest of metal how talented Negru is, and how wisely he choose to fill out the reminder of the new band. No one does what Negura does in metal; no one mixes the non-metal styles more fluidly.
While this can't grade out as perfectly (or be quite as influential) as Om, that is hardly a slight. I eagerly wait the new lineup to congeal for the next album, in the mean time, this is the early leader for my album of the year.
I've been furiously banging the drum for this band since 02 when I bought 'N Crugu Bradului on a whim from The End Records because it came with a twig from the Transylvania forests, and I don't think I am ever going to ever stop
