I reviewed "Majesty and Decay" for MA today, quite the odd similarity though your review was more concise. Your exactly right about the rhythm section, the moments in the title track and most of the songs are just well-thought out. They totally destroyed Suffocation on this album, the songs just have that consistency to them. This is more then likely the best death metal effort of 2010, and I know I'm speaking prematurely. I really enjoyed this release and I commend you for your excellent review.

Just another awesome Immo album, I'm convinced they couldn't release a sub par album even if they wanted to. About the only complaint I can come up with is A Token Of Malice is too short, it just randomly ends right in the middle of a cool part. Nice review btw.

Know what you mean but I love that ending. Really throws you off balance, which is what Immolation should do.

So I listened to it, and well, wasn't too impressed. Sure, it's only my first listen, but I usually like my death metal to be hella fast and this was only kinda fast. Maybe it was because I listened to it at 1 am and was tired, but it just didn't click. I'll give it a few more listens though.

Dude, you have to put it on LOUD, and then just let the sound wash over you. :dio:

But yeah, definitely an acquired taste. Took me a long time to get into Immolation cos it doesn't have the speed or the tunes that other bands in the genre have. It's more about oppressive atmosphere and really, really heavy songs that it can be hard to get a handle on.

I agree with the "it needs to be loud" part. As it was 1 am when I listened and I had 5 people sleeping just above me, so it was pretty low. It's not like I didn't like it, it just didn't grab by the balls on the first listen like I was hooping. I'll give it another spin tonight and come back with updated comments.

You might be better off starting with Unholy Cult or Harnessing Ruin, both of those are a bit more accessible than the last two. Immolation definitely aren't about breaking the sound barrier or anything, its much more brooding and crushing than really any other death metal band out there.

To steal a word off their website, they make "adventurous" death metal, and that is really a great way to explain their music. Such a unique band.

Woohoo!

I'm glad you guys took my request, :D

Immolation are fucking massive but they've been plagued with quite bad sound on their latest few CDs (just like Suffocation sadly enough), has that improved on this one?

I'll be seeing them live soon (together with Rotting Christ!). The more I think about it, the more I see other similarities to Suffocation. Immolation live is a completely different beast than on CD, and is something that should be experienced by anyone that favors death metal.

.:crast:.

The production is excellent on this album, much better than Shadows In The Light I think. Everything sounds absolutely crushing, especially Dolan's vox.

What you need is a good pair of headphones.

Or balls.

They can't grab you by the balls if you don't have any.

Don't much care for this. Immolation are one of my favourite DM bands but even they can't overcome the "not worth hearing more than two albums" curse of the genre.
