I believe this album could even be a classic. It was the first Savatage album that put them on that "Theatrical Rock" road....more piano parts, longer songs, etc.

I agree this is one of their best stuff ever.

Are you kidding me songs like "When The Crowds Are Gone" showcase just how powerful and emotional Jon Olivia is as a vocalist.

Love that song, but that fucker reminds me of Air Supply's "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All." Haha.

Anyway, fantastic album, one that should definitely be a classic. Not only is the one a favorite for countless numbers of fans, it was somewhat of a mainstream success, at least relative to anything else they did.

Meh. Hall Of The Mountain King was both a better album and more popular. I personally feel, as Jeff does, that this was the band's first foray into a different, more "theatrical" sound. However, it was not - in my opinion - their best album in that vein, nor was it their most popular, so I'm not sure why the calls for classic status are justified. Perhaps in terms of influence on other bands at the time, but even so was it really that huge?

I agree with everyone calling this a classic. I dunno if it meets the criteria as I was 4 when it came out but for me, now, personally, it is a classic. Also the instrumental Silk and Steel is amazing and very relaxing, love it.

And while She's In Love isn't the greatest Savatage song, not even close, it is a fun listen. I think I read somewheres that Oliva wanted the song to be called She Sucks Cock and even though he had to change the name, the lyrics are still quite funny, making the song a fun listen now and then.

Anyways, still a good review, thank you so much for covering one of my favorites. :dio:

IMO, a Classic. But well, I'm a Savatage fanboy.

Classic? Maybe.

Does it contain KILLER songs? Most definitely.

When the Crowds Are Gone = one of the most emotional songs ever. Shocked it's not given more props in the review. How can you not love that screaming at the end? MONSTER tune.

If you're talking commercially, Hall of the Mountain King was not more popular. Beyond that, if you're talking about popularity among fans, that's all subjective.

Once again, if you were just a kid at this time there's no way you can accurately discuss popularity. "Gutter Ballet" was played on the radio—all the time. And not to mention MTV and such. No other Sava song or album got that much attention.

And "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)" doesn't count. Haha.

According to Amazon.com Hall Of The Mountain King's CD sales rank is 7,448 (#65 in their progressive metal category) compared to Gutter Ballet's 9,827 (#78 in prog metal). I realize this is only for their site, but I would bet that in terms of total albums sold since their release, Hall Of The Mountain King has done better.

I realize that, but I think it's still relevant. If someone can find actual music industry statistics instead of just giving me their opinion that would be cool too.

I need to give this one more listens. I love Gutter Ballet and When the Crowds are Gone, but the other songs didn't resonate with me.
