I was largely underwhelmed by this. The songs are too short, the leads are mostly missing, the whole thing seems rushed. Yes, the title track is excellent, and a couple other tracks are quite memorable (The Day You Built the Wall) but this whole thing reminded me of Enemies of Reality--I just didn't get the feeling that the whole band was fully behind either release.

This decade has seen their best album (Godless Endeavor) flanked by their two worst; perhaps Nevermore's inconsistency speaks to their fights with Century Media; or Loomis and Dane becoming more attached to side projects; or the imminent Sanctuary reunion. But they should strongly consider breaking up if they don't have another Godless Endeavor, or even another Dead Heart, in them.

This one left me with mixed feeling. It seems to be Nevermore doing the Nevermore thing again and again. This feeling of deja-vu was quite disappointing. One one hand, it's better than This Godless Endeavor because it's more ear-friendly, on the other hand, it's way too predictable to be up to their best records.
I wouldn't give it more than a 70/100.

Not sure what's not to like about this album. It absolutely slays. I agree with review for the most part, although I don't understand not liking Emptiness Unobstructed. If anything I think the opener is the weakest track.

In short, this has pretty much everything I want in a metal album.

I want them to surprise me which was not the case here.
FYI, my fav' Nevermore album is Dead Heart in a Dead World, OC is nowhere as good.

I like that album, but I think this sounds a lot fresher than DHIADW. The songwriting is much more diverse.

And IMHO, you claiming this is better than Godless Endeavor makes you certifiably crazy.

Nevermore rules.

Quick question: Why the Atmospheric tag?

Emptiness Unobstructed is the most accessible song on this record it reminds The Heart Collector.

It took me a while to get into this album. After two listens I was ready to dismiss it as a mediocre release. But like it often happens, after multiple listens I discovered hooks where I did not hear them, The detailed and layered guitar work of Jeff Loomis and so forth. IMO cuts like "Moonrise", "Emptiness Unobstructed", "Without Morals," "The Day You Built The Wall" and "The Obsidian Conspiracy" are the highlights of this album.
As for the cover of the Tea Party's "Temptation" I prefer, and by far, the original because Jeff Martin's vocals are better and fit the song in a better fashion.

The Obsidian Conspiracy is a great listen much in the vain of its predecessor "This Godly Endeavor" but doesn't surpass "Dead Heart In A Dead World".

4/5

The former was an unknown band to me before this, apparently a somewhat successful Canadian band that dabbled from blues to prog rock while taking hints from eastern musical styles and industrial alike. After listening their original, Nevermore has added a sweet Nile-esque acoustic intro while upping the heavy metal-factor of the rest to create a disturbingly quirky number, where most notably the combo of the keyboards and riffs in the opening remind me of Awake-era Dream Theater

First of all, the acoustic intro was not added by Nevermore it's part of the original. You probably listened to the video or radio single which doesn't contain the intro.

Second, The Tea Party was huge here in Canada. It also had quite a following in Australia and some parts of Europe where they toured often. Not to be disrespectful, but a little fact checking would be great before writing fallacies.

I'd start from their self titled album and work your way up to This Godless Endeavor.

They get progressively better each album.

That's a great album but my fav is Dreaming Neon Black. I like the heaviness and eeriness of that album.
