i just love patton's voice. if anything, i see his albums like this as an excuse to do some real singing and leave the experimental stuff at home. i haven't heard the full album, but i've seen tons from the concert and he is just one of those artists like Tom Waits or Frank Zappa that can fit into any genre he wants to. I may have to pick this up.

How does that review justify a score of 70/100? That score, for an album that you didn't even really discuss in the review (probably because you can't listen to it), and when you did, you said it was disappointing and that you'll rarely listen to it.

Yet a score that indicates it's three points away from perfection. Absurd.

From the Icarus Witch thread:

Quote:
If Mike Patton farts in a bottle and records it rolling down a hill, it's declared genius...because, for whatever reason, Patton is somehow regarded as being a great songwriter, which he's not.

Seriously, these threads are like right next to each other... So, is this site too complementary, or too harsh about Patton? Either way, we must be doing something wrong mustn't we, even if you can't work out what it is!

By the way, as you will know if you follow the site, 70 is actually a fairly low score indicating a pretty average album. Just the way levels seem to have settled over the years. In most music magazines etc. 6 is a pretty disappointing score, and this is only one point above that.

No problem.
And actually, I think I enjoy that Mondo Cane album more than most other people on MR to the point that it's probably going to be in my 2010's top 10 list...

To save derailing the Icarus Witch thread... Howlin' Wolf- you crazy!

Hey! What's not to like? Vocals? Great! Melodies? Great! Production? Great! Arrangements? Great too!
I'm not a Patton fanboy and this one caught me by surprise. When I was expecting something sucky, I got something rather refreshing which plays along the line of Mr Bungle's California which happens to be the only Bungle album I can stomach from start to finish.

Well, I only listened to this through once or twice. I got the promo and didn't really have anything to say about it so gave it up to Zad. Just... there's not really anything going on. It's Patton singing some Italian pop songs. Didn't find anything that interesting about the album.

Of course, if you're looking for something groundbreaking or edgy, this is clearly not something that has it. If you're just looking for good songs, it does the trick nicely.

This, exactly. I think the review is a good one, personally, and I'm not going to apologise for not being au fait with 50s Italian pop - score given indicates an album just above decent that I, personally, will not be listening to much. What's to fathom?

Incidentally, I'm so glad Ken returned to leave his little comments around the forum, like a stray dog with a spastic colon! It may piss you off at the time, but there's that underlying fondness for the l'il critter that makes up for the shit on your shoes.
