Yeah, a 70 for this album is practically criminal.

For one of the most overrated albums of all time? Nah.

I honestly think of it as more of a 40-50 album musically, but I give it points for historical importance and at the very least being extremely original.

The first thing that comes to mind is the drums, which are so obnoxious they make the album unlistenable.

My other problems with it are far more subjective: I don't like the song structures, I don't like the riffing styles, and I don't like how it's a "Death Metal" album over an hour in length. I could get into more specifics about all that, but what's the point? I'll never change anyone's mind.

I actually did enjoy it on the first listen or two, but even then not as much as apparently every other metalhead under the sun. I dunno, maybe it was the hype.

I suppose the drum sound does take a little getting used to, but you can't fault the drumming itself. I dunno, man, I love the proggy song structures and they fill the length well so that's not a problem, but I like leftfield stuff in general. Heard the Appalling Spawn album?

Heard OF it. It might be more my cup of tea; isn't it a little more straightforward?

Yeah, less atmospheric stuff and more post-Cryptopsy heaviness. Still proggy and that, though.

Never got into this even though I think I should have. Maybe I'll try again.

I started listening to some tracks off of Appalling Spawn's demo, and I daresay it's much more to my liking. It has a somewhat similar sound to Elvenefris but is much darker and grittier, both in riffs and production.

idk death metal is fast, violent music with pitchless vocals. When I like an hour long album it has to cover a lot of ground musically, or take it's time introducing and expanding upon ideas. By definition, death metal doesn't do either of these so an hour long dm album is destined for failure.

Even an hour-long Progressive Death Metal album? Jeez.

I don't understand this complaint either. Death Metal albums aren't all that short, and a lot of the newer bands feature long tracks and albums (Ulcerate, Lost Souls, Dead Congregation, Augury, etc.). And they don't have to be 'progressive' either; Nile churns out long tracks regularly, heck, even Incantation made a few monsters (Morbid Angel too).

Death metal is not just, say, Cannibal Corpse.

It's more the fact that it feels too long rather than the running time. Hell, Gorguts' Obscura is an hour and it's one of my favorite albums of all time.

imo 35 minutes is the ideal DM album length. Longest I listen to regularly is A Celebration of Guilt which is 45 minutes... going beyond that only works if you do lots of not death metal, like Opeth.
