I never got what the deal is with this band. I mean, do you have to be insanely stoned for it to sound good?

It was like a slow, completely predictable version of Prong. I've heard their albums many times and simply didn't like it.

Glad to see another Kyuss review on this site. And a very good one too, except that you left one of my favorite songs (Tangy Zizzle) off your track-by-track analysis.

I definitely agree that this is probably the album most like Homme's later work with QOTSA (which makes sense, being Kyuss's last album). In addition to being slower and grumpier, it also sounds a little more mainstream than the band's other three albums. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've heard Size Queen on the radio at least once before.

Perhaps...if you haven't sat down and listened to Welcome to Sky Valley (or any of their albums really) through a decent pair of headphones and a blurry haze of pot smoke...dude, you're missing out. And I don't think unpredictability is the point, it's all about the riffs, and the groove. Just let yourself go, man...
Also, great review Zad (or do you prefer Goat these days :P), I think the scores for all Kyuss albums on the site are perfectly accurate representations, although I might personally put Sky Valley a couple of points over Blues. El Rodeo was always a favourite of mine from this album, wacky indeed...also my copy of the album doesn't have a hidden track at the end of Spaceship Landing, it just runs its 11:14 course and that's that - I'm assuming I'm not missing out on anything particularly brilliant?
Ah well, needless to say, I'm going to see them when the circus rolls into my town. Talk about a dream come true!

On my copy, there are actually two hidden tracks. One has the band members "Doo-wopping" for a couple seconds, and the next is a song called One Day, which was originally on the Demon Cleaner single in late-1994 and is a lyrical tribute to Kurt Cobain.

I love Kyuss and I love this album. It's great to see them getting some recognition at MR.

One of the most absurdly overrate bands ever. Out of everything they did, they had approximately one album's worth of good material. The rest was total blah.

I agree, except make it an EP.

Not that I like Kyuss, but I'm seeing disturbing similarities between Ken and Adveser.

Well, to right things, he posted on Blabbermouth that Vince Neil sounded great in some live clips. I was listening, and I thought he sounded like total shit.

I'd have posted there, but I've been banned from Blabbermouth. Twice.

He sounded better than I've ever heard him. It is a most definite improvement. Yeah, he's not Fabio Lione, but seriously, there were not a lot of issues that he's had in the past. If you think the tone sucks that's another issue. Technically I didn't hear any reason to bash the guy unlike in the past. I was expecting a shit fest and got better than I anticipated.

Yeah it's lame that he holds the mike out during the choruses at times, but seriously, he sounded great for being Vince. Is he a great singer, no, but it's nothing like that shit performance from the us festival.

If you can't nail that high-pitched part in "Live Wire," you don't play "Live Wire." Simple as that. It's like the coolest part of the song. Haha.

Well that's the thing. In my experience high notes are pretty effortless. The stuff in the middle is hard because there is so much to control at once.

It is really hard to learn how to sing in a chest falsetto. It took me 5 years to figure it out. I credit Edu Falaschi.

James Hetfield was the master at it until that "vocal coach" got hold of him.

Sorry for the off-topic discussion people, but we'll take it where we can get it :)
