Poop for tools that think Krallice are black metal, these guys can only slightly write a song for gods sake. Stop the bullshit and write a good riff for once, and for the love of god someone kill that idiot of a vocalist.

Love love love Veins of God. That song is fucking spectacular. The rest of it is some weird post-metal noise with moments of Big Black and other random shit that isn't black metal. Don't know my general opinion for the album as a whole.

+1. That sentence resumes the whole album.

Can't believe you put DsO and this shit in the same sentence... :omfg:

Most black metal bands that we like rarely write good "riffs" as much as good chord progressions, and these guys can come up with some pretty great ones.

The singer is pretentious as hell but so is just about every other black metal band. At least he isn't running around stage licking a pig's head or staring at a noose on his front porch.

All of the chord progressions in the world couldn't save this hipster circle jerk from writing a riff 1/100th as decent as even a modern band like Merrimack. The lack of coherence in their music is about as unsettling as the burrito that came out of my ass this morning, and still I'd rather have the pig's head than some loser doing open mic while his friends play over-glorified Behold the Arctopus riffs.

Yikes, this is the reaction after a review giving it 78? I dread to think what would have happened if it got above 90...

Perhaps I'll have to. In general the last 4 or 5 new reviewers are not very good. Their tastes...

I agree but this review was written on a Zad-level (ie . :dio: -good). Nothing on this record reminded me of the shitty scale-fest that is Behold the Arctopus. I think this guy is pretentious as hell but I really like the music and the direction taken in trying to do something different.

Last thing I need is another black metal band either trying to musically convey their contrived feelings about the horrors that Christianity has wrought on their long dead ancestors or some guy who (most likely) grew up in a developed country, without a chronic illness, having somewhere to live, and with enough money and free time to write and record music, screaming about how hopeless and depressing his life is while grinding the fuck out of some E minor chord.

Well there's a video for Returner....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xlce1u6BVAs

Why does their riffing remind me a little bit of Fall of Troy?
....or something......

And yeah, that singer needs a beating.
.....or something.....

Really interesting, funny and clever review. Much enjoyed.
Not so much the band or the album, but a damn good review.

Wow, I didn't even think of Big Black but now that you mention it I'm gonna have to listen to it again and see. I always wanted to get more into that band. Fall of Troy, Sonic Youth, Swans etc. yadda yadda yadda all fit the bill too for influence. What I really like is how much of a reaction this band gets. If you hate this band, hate it down to your guts then that means that it got you to take enough time to notice and even with a record that I don't love, I can respect how 2 people can hear completely different sounds.

I hear an above average minimalist black metal group with a couple cool ideas and plenty of bad ones.

Someone else says that they are the scourge of the earth and simply mentioning another band (Who I already admitted were a much better band) with the slightest of comparisons can cause rage. But that's what makes it interesting and that's what makes reviewing such obviously controversial bands interesting. I might get some insults about my taste or my writing, but I don't claim to have good taste or be a good writer, I just write what I hear even if it makes me look foolish. In the end its just an excuse to talk about music.

I'll probably put the album away and come back to it at the end of the year to see if there is anything still there or if it really is what the metal masses say.
