Chris, I totally agree with your review. You got it SPOT ON. I was suprised to see a 96/100, dont get me wrong, this album rocks, i just didnt think it would get such a high score. I was thinking somewhere from 90-93, but i'll take the 96 anyday.
Like you, I also was hooked on Sentenced from their Down album and have never looked back. One thing that i really like about this band is that they do not have 1 bad album, not 1. (Down to Funeral album). All their post-Down albums have all been masterpieces, all been so consistent. Every albums is worth a 90 something out of 100.
I agree that the Funeral album is more like a continuation of the Cold White Light...almost like a part 2. One thing i have noticed is that lyrically, they have kinda moved away from the "in your face, depressing suicide stuff", the totally obvious death-type lyrics. Yes there are a few songs on the latest album which does talk about death, but its not as full on as in previous albums where we had tracks like The Suicider, Grave Sweet Grave, Drown Together, Noose, Bleed, etc, etc.
Death is always going to be associated with Sentenced, its always going to be in their lyrics, i've just noticed they have brought it down a notch or two with their last 2 albums, whether its a good or bad thing makes no difference as this album is just as good as their previous 4.
For Sentenced, its a great way to bow out, although i'm sure that Ville will hang around with his Poisonblack duties and the guitarists, Sami Lopakka and Miika Tenkula would automatically get gigs elsewhere if they wanted to.
So farewell Sentenced, R.I.P and i will look forward to the countless hours i spend playing your albums over and over and will never get sick of them. I hope to see new work from all the members of this great metal band in the not too distant future.....

I expected no less from Sentenced, and I knew they'd make their final album amazing.

R.I.P, Sentenced. Your presence will be missed.

Thanks December Flower, I'm also glad to be back into reviewing, even though my free time is limited, I will still try to contribute as often as possible.

Trooper : Yep I hesitated between 93 and 96... esepecially that I found Cold White Light and The Funeral album to be a tie... they both kill... but I have a slight preference for this one now, maybe because I'm listening to it all day long :), hehe. As for the lyrics, its interesting what you said, I didn't noticed at first but you're right, its a little less oriented "death by suicide" than the previouses ones. They're still "funny" anyway (I always take them to the second degree).

Chris

I found it strange that when i first listened to Sentenced, i wasnt shocked by the lyrics when i first read them. As everyone knows, their suicide and death lyrics are quite....how can i put it...OUT THERE, very full on. I guess that the reason i didnt take the lyrics literally was because i am "mentally healthy", not depressed or easily influenced by things of that nature.
Living all the way down in Australia, I would be unaware of people in other countries, particulary Finland and Europe as a whole where Sentenced would be most popular, where fans have taken the lyrics literally, have been taken over and totally influenced by the lyrics and have killed themselves...leaving clues that it was Sentenced that "made me do it" ala Metallica's "Fade To Black" controversy in the States in the mid/late 80's.
If people can be influenced by black metal so much that they want to burn down churches, etc, could the same apply with Sentenced and their suicide-heavy lyrics do the same with a "depressed" fan who has taken the lyrics too seriously?
Has Sentenced coped any flack from their lyrics in Europe?

Chris: I went over all their albums again from Down to their latest one, and i just cant pick an album to be the outright best....all are so equal and consistent...they all deserve to be the best. Once again-- Great Review :)

I love The Cold White Light too but this one disapoints me. The style is the same, but the melodies are just not as good. May today become the day is just a duller copy of Cross my heart and hope to die, and I can say the same about the rest of the album. Maybe I need more listenings, but right now I'm not too happy with it. Though I see most people really seem to like it.

Finally again a metalreview.com review which convinced me so much that I immediately had to get the CD. Although this wasn't exactly my cup of tea at first listening (IMHO they sound a bit like a heavy variety of HIM), I found it amazing how well done this is (vocals, no-nonsense breaks, emotional-laden guitar solos). After some more spins I got roped into this unique musical universe and now I'm totally addicted to it. This is already on my desert island list.

Thanks for this very nice review!

From the albums I have from them, I think this is the best one. I just have Frozen, The Cold White Light and this Funeral Album. It really makes me sad to know they're "breaking up", this is one band that I was starting to follow. Now, there's only their previous albums to get.

A great band, it's sad it has come to an end.

Check out "Down" and "Crimson" as they are much like the other Sentenced albums you have. Down was the first album from when Sentenced changed their style of music/vocals and a defining moment in their career, while Crimson came out between Frozen and The Cold White Light and is very good, just as good as all the others...
