Should've been a classic. Oh well.

Well, like they say, hindsight is always 20/20.

I really like Pearl Jam's self-titled album. May be I'll check this out someday.

You've not heard this? For shame.

I like the songs individually (especially Black and Jeremy) but I've never really been able to give this a full listen. Maybe I should.

Seriously, without a doubt, this album is one of my favorites. Every song is a classic. The last little instrumental, I think Release, is the only bland track but everything else is 10/10. Stellar. Porch and Deep are probably my favorite tracks. All the singles are great.

in many ways this is THE Rock album of the nineties, a recognized classic.

So why isn't it?

This is the first real rock CD I ever owned, and it was the gateway to hard rock and heavy metal for me. An amazing album, Deep is the only song where I get the urge to skip forward. I've heard this album probably more times than any other by any band, and it never gets old for me.

Two interesting sidenotes. As Zad pointed out, Ten is a reference to the jersey number of Mookie Blaylock. The original name of the band was actually Mookie Blaylock, but they were forced to change it. Also, the story behind the actual name Pearl Jam. The notion, supplied by the band, has long been that the name is derived from Eddie's grandmother Pearl, who had a recipe for homemade jam laced with halluconigens. That's the impression that I've been under until I saw Eddie say in an interview a couple years back that the story is "total bullshit".

Haha, not to be confused with pearl necklace.

The real story of the name is pretty pedestrian. They picked the name Pearl for no particular reason, and then added the Jam after they saw a Neil Young concert and were blown away by how he stretched 9 songs to last 3 hours by jamming and improvising.

That's good; they aren't the kind of band that should be called "sperm"... that's more fitting for some grind schmoes.

Superb rock album, and pretty much the only thing I really like from Pearl Jam.

No Code and Yield are my favorites.
Ten's good but Pearl Jam had yet to affirm their own song.
