Here is the thing though I think Epica can do with a clean male voice to complement Simone's voice much like Marco does with Nightwish. Mark needs to start doing some clean vocals because the death vox stuff gets really old quickly.

Still though Epica is a good band with a top quality vocalist and a solid orchestrated arrangement.

+1000

The constant growling is the thing that turns me off quite a bit to the new Epica album. I agree that they are a very talented band but they're following a formula, that at this point, is making them highly predictable and kind of boring.

I'll have to disagree here. I love Mark's growls and they make songs like "Design your universe" even more splendid due to the contrast with simone's awesome vocals. They also bring a sense of urgency in songs, without them, there would be less feeling as well.

For some reason I never really got into these guys but I've heard a couple songs from this album and they're both awesome. I think I'll be checking it out in the near future.

I've listened to this album twice this morning through my Sol Republic headphones (yes, a shameless plug) and I really need to amend my previous remarks because this is an absolutely brilliant album. They've swirled together a perfect concoction of metal, classical, choirs, and a hint of ambient. The lyrics are the best they've written and Simone has never sounded better. I really look forward to their new album next month.
