Good review, although as a fellow Aussie I feel almost obliged to defend against any and all criticism, even when it's perfectly valid :P

This is a very good album though, and I feel that And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope should warrant a mention as well, with its incredibly laid-back opening section that really exemplifies these guys' ear for melody.

The point about Jens Bogren producing is an interesting one as well - he seems to be on a bit of an Aussie kick recently (Chaos Divine, Voyager, Be'lakor, now this) - coincidence? Anyway, great to see this album getting some decent recognition around the world.

Heard about them way back but I think my tastes have changed way too much to be concerned about this album. However, a new Virgin Black album would peak my interests...

This band and album has been getting a lot of hype so I decided to check it out. Needless to say it didn't live up to that hype but it definitely is an interesting album. The main problem I have with it is that the songs can get a bit dull at times and it took at least five listens to be able to even remember a part of a song afterwards.
One thing the review didn't touch upon, to my surprise, were the clean vocals. They are quite "poppy" and were a turn off for me at first. I got used to them eventually but I'd still love to hear these songs with a different vocalist. Nevertheless, a promising band with a ton of potential and plenty of room to grow. It turns out to be a very good album if you're willing to give it time to grow on you.
