I also wondered what the hell happened to this band when I listened to this album....so poor compared to their previous efforts

Sorry Thomas, but no way in hell that this is a "50 album".
75 - 80 IMO. I was also disappointed after first listen or two but I'm enjoying it more and more with each spin. No, it's not as good as previous albums and yes it is more rockish this time but the quality is undoubtedly present.

P.S. Listening to it right now, and the last 4 tracks alone make this a worthy Grand Magus record.

I should probably have been clearer in the review as to why I scored it that low. It isn't even half as good as their earlier work. If you take a look at our scoring system I don't think it's close to being very good or outstanding. It's an average album IMO, hence the average score.

I have no problem with people who disagree with me, if this works for you then awesome, nothing is better than that.

The problem is that I don't see many scores low as this on MetalReviews, and first thing that comes to mind when I see it is "fu***ng awful crap of an album " . Your other three Grand Magus reviews are awsome and I agree with the scores you gave them, so I cannot understand how can you be disappointed so much with this. Is it absence of doom or hard rock feel on some songs.
I might be wrong, but this is a good record, dip in quality, yes, but quality release nonetheless.

My apologies if this turned out like I'm attacking you or something cause it's definitely not like that. I just think The Hunt deserves more.

I've got no problem with that.

I think our opinions differ vastly here, so there's no chance that we agree. I think Iron Will was a classic, this is far worse, and I take no particular joy in listening to it. Has my expectations colored the score I gave it? Maybe, but IMO scoring this in the 70s wouldn't be right at all.

This isn't directed at you particularly, but with all the whining of the overscoring of albums here, one would think that an average score for an average album would be deserved and accepted.

The worst thing about this album is the production if you ask me. It's so stripped down and weak. There's absolutely no punch outside of the vocals.

Pick up Pale Divine's 'Painted Windows Black' and it will help you forget all about the misstep Grand Magus has made with 'The Hunt'.

Im with you on this. This may not be th greatest album of all time but its still decent. Quite catchy after a couple of spins.

I can understand why some people wouldnt like it , especially if compared with their previous work but its not 50 bad. Id say 75ish is about right

Not sure why people have an issue with this album? Sure, it's got more of a traditional heavy metal thing going on, but the songs are excellent.

And yes, listen to Raven and check out Pale Divine. Any album will do. Fantastic band.

Pale Divine is good stuff. The song Amplified is, well, amplified.

Indeed, what I have heard of this album is very good.

You know, every once in a while a reviewer decides to take the scoring descriptions literally .. 99% of people treat percent scores like school grades and you can't change that.

If this site wanted to have consistent low scores, they should have gone with 4-star system. It's much easier to hand out a 2-star than a 50%.

I picked this up a few days ago, and surprise, surprise .. I found it highly enjoyable.

I saw them live about 3 weeks ago and it turns out many of the kick-ass songs I remembered from their live set were from this album.

I think this album would appeal to most of those who enjoy retro/stoner rock/metal. About the only thing this disc lacks is originality .. but that's not necessarily a bad thing with music of this style.

86 from me.
