Never heard any of their new stuff, but if they've taken the same path as Anathema it undoubtedly sucks.

As usual I agree with this review. Their previous effort, which I thoroughly enjoyed, was a strong comeback album considering the huge loss of an iconic female vocalist such as Anneke. I still don't understand why they would open with an instrumental on the first album with a new singer. I love Anneke, but it was a time and place that will never be again. They were obviously drifting and it showed in the album quality. The new Gathering material is softer and Silje really embraces this direction and wears it perfectly. It's quiet music for a quiet mood, but very deep and progressive for those willing to explore it. Anneke's recent solo work doesn't hold a candle to The Gathering IMO, but It's nice to hear Anneke's voice. The songwriting is no where near the quality of The Gathering, but it is good and worth picking up though.

Anneke's solo stuff is really good, but it makes no sense to even compare. About as much sense as comparing anything post-Nighttime Birds to those early albums. Just way too different stylistically, you know.

But this is indeed a great album. :dio:
