The first Sabbath album I listened to and one of my personal favs. I never understood the criticism this album received. A great listening experience from start to finish. Not a single weak track. Love this album.

Heavy fuckin metal! This album rules. I listened to it earlier today, thanks to Thomas. Dio is in fine form, even Halford doesn't sound too bad doing these songs live.

Black Sabbath = greatest metal band ever :dio:

criminally under-rated album, it's my favourite Sabbath album with Dio and one of my favourite metal albums. period.

I always enjoyed it back in the day. These days, I might think the songs are just a minute too long or so. I probably prefer the Heaven & Hell album to this. Both are solid 75/100 for me. I'm gonna give this a spin. It is more of an album you bob your head to, worshiping at the throne of Dio and Iommi.

I personally prefer this to Heaven and Hell, I'd put it at about an 85 to Heaven and Hell at 81

it's a marginal difference of course both are very, very good albums

It's nowhere near as good as Heaven and Hell or Mob Rules, but it's a fucking amazing album nonetheless. I'd say 88 - 90 is about right for this. I'd rate the other two higher.

yeah it's odd that I prefer this to Heaven and Hell but still think Heaven and Hell is a better album, I think I just overplayed H&H and ruined it, if I left it for a few years then gave H&H another spin I'd probably change my opinion on it

Oh, wait. No I meant the band Heaven and Hell. The Devil You Know. Dehumanizer and it are 80s to the original Heaven and Hell's being a 95 and Mob Rules being a 90 in my book. Listening to 'Too Late', it's crazy how much weight Iommi's riffs can carry. His skill just does so much work on this album. Dio as well. It's a weird album where the song writing isn't great, but it's like pure skill just carrying it to the finish line.

Tyr (with Tony Martin) has to be the most underrated Black Sabbath album when Dehumanizer is just an embarrassing attempt to revive Dio's era BS. Same goes with Heaven and Hell (the band).
Imho, RJD fitted more to Rainbow.

ooh creepy

that Dehumanizer is carried by the pure talent of Ioomi and Dio making up for less then brilliant songwriting (and yet somehow I like it over Heaven & Hell which is the superior Sabbath album, go figure)

oh and can you please, please explain how the mind of Annoying Frenchman works? I am at my wits end trying to figure out how he can hate classic Bathory and classic Obituary tracks

Yeah. I don't really see people going all religiously fanatic about this album. You're the one that likes it though.

Obit' never clicked with me and I'm mighty picky about my Bathory.

Oh I see. I much prefer Dehumanizer to The Devil You Know. I actually had heaps of trouble getting into that one. If Dehumanizer is an 88 then The Devil You Know is a 70 for me.

the aforementioned forum had some strange people on it, yeah I like this album, but there were a bunch of people who really did worship it, and when the mods don't care about forum users being abused constantly it's time to go

clearly then you were the wrong person to query regarding Frenchie

Dio was well suited to Rainbow, I agree, but no less well suited to Iommi in my opinion. And suggesting any Tony Martin era records were better than Dehumanizer is crazy. I don't hate on Martin, I like all of them except Forbidden, but they're not a patch on Dehumanizer.

I have never heard a single Martin era track. I don't know if I want to. On principle. Sabbath could have spent all day trying to rejuvenate RJD era Sabbs. I would eat it up like a Sumo wrestler at a sushi buffet.

Well if you're going to try one I'll agree with Stefan and say go with Tyr. If you like that, maybe try The Eternal Idol or Cross Purposes, but stay the hell away from Forbidden.
