"Barbaric Romantic Metal Opera"

Excellent labeling, Olivier. That's a very thoughtful way of describing this kind of music; very creative I must say! This is yet another album I will pick up if I see it anywhere. Great job, buddy!

The keyboard arrangements mixed with some of the faster songs like Sword of the gods, Blaze of Victory, and Great sword of flame is just as the word suggested "epic". Defeis is one of the greatest singers in metal, and the guy's keyboard arrangements make the album just as much as the riffs. I have yet to hear part 2 but the band truly mixes epic and poetic parts with great power metal, hearing these guys so late in listening to this music is something I regret. But Invictus is one of my favorite metal albums as a result, and this one is just as great as this band can possibly make. I can't think of any power metal bands that had as magnificent as a run as these guys had in the mid-nineties. :dio:

It's not me, the band itself labeled Act I & II as Barbaric Romantic Metal Opera. Chris already picked that (perfect) labeling for Act II, it was only fitting I chose the same (again, perfect) labeling for Act I.

@Steve: absolutely.

Sword of the Gods isn't here, it's in Invictus. I agree with everything else you said. David has one of the most beautiful and unique voices in Metal.

My ignorance, then. I will have to check out this album.

Ok :dio:

Good review. Great album. DeFeis is "Da king".
Only I have yet to hear such a wonderful record that annoys me while I listen to it, those short instrumentals and interludes are the main reason The Atreus albums do NOT reach Marriage of Heaven & Hell duo or Invuctus.

I should totally get this, Invictus slays (literally!) nearly every US power metal album I've ever heard. Great review! :dio:

A band I've seen the name thrown around a lot before but never gave a chance. If this is on iTunes I'll download it right now.

Start with the album Invictus, their absolute masterpiece. If you don't like Invictus, then Virgin Steele isn't for you (except older stuff, maybe).

edit: (and check out the Razorwyre review, this band might knock you out)

^ Good assessment though I don't think he might be able to get into some of the intros and interludes that make a large portion of the album. Invictus is more or less their most intense album though along with Age of Consent (to a lesser extent)

Will do. But iTunes has neither.
