When I first heard Thebes I knew their latter stuff was definitely the place to start listening to their material, though Variations on a theme as a bizarre overlong droney Sabbath influenced album is good for the concept it is. This album begins with the sounds of the beautiful female voice and ends quite well, I enjoyed every minute of it especially the Arabic instrumentals. In spite of what people say about Al's vocals I can't imagine the project without him, and overall the album is one of my top for 2012.
