I listened to this a few times and I agree with the score.

7/10 for me.

I have listened to this album enough now to say that I think it's pretty good. Burzum is definitely mood music and if you listen to it at the wrong time you might not like it at all. I think it's a album that shows musical growth and experimentation. That is always good cause Varg is into it and will continue to release thought provoking music. He has a particular brand of trance inducing hypnotic music with a earthy primal and cultural air. I really enjoy it when I'm in the right mood. For me it is tranquil and soothing.

Although I would have scored this album a few points higher I agree that this a little too self-indulgent. It does have a very specific "aura" about, no doubt, but it does get a bit, how can one say, a loss of value in musical credibility in terms what can be in fact "album material" and what Varg can play in his studio when just "playing around" with musical ideas it seems.

The album for a period of a solid three months never left my playlist for Certain songs, notably Elven Dance, The Sacred Tree, and Gallow forest. Varg mustve had a lot of latent creative energy prior to the release of Belus, because the sheer overwhelming amount of material has left a metal community speechless and in terms of the underground bm community repulsed. Seeing as the youthful church burning Varg has matured, and his creativity mellowed out to seek a less black metal sound overall. I welcome this change as someone who never felt the isolation and coldness as expressed by the countless individuals undoubtedly influenced by Burzum's S/t and Filosofem, I have only recently made my peace with Det som Engang var and the latter and stil prefer the other Norwegian bands to Burzum as a whole. Overall, in lieu of an album that has pissed many off, I welcome latter Burzum with open arms and I hope he continues to take Burzum farther as a project uniquely his own

If radiohead is dad-rock this is certainly dad-bm. Meandering, dreamy, lacking almost all aggression and with a 'softer' sense of melancholy compared to say 'Hvis...'.

Overall not bad, would rate it higher than Zad, but his criticism of the repetitive nature and self-indulgence is spot on. I also have a problem with Varg's insistence on making the guitars more and more 'jangly' on his new albums, almost no low end on them on this album.

Overall I find it more hypnotic than boring - 8.5/10
