Great job Jason, I couldn't have said it better myself. After all the undeserved Opeth bashing i've been hearing lately it's nice to read a review from someone who knows what the fuck they're talking about.

Indeed, 98 is ludicrous.

I'm centering more around a 60 or so, but I might give it another listen just to solidify the rating.

I gave it an 81 because I kinda like the number.

Reverie / Harlequin's Forest is their new masterpiece.. if it was a single I'd rate it a 98. The rest of the songs are 75s or theirabouts, just solid Opeth songs.

I probably use it because of Spaceballs. That movie left a lasting impression on my vocabulary.

Fantastic review. I think the album is absolutely stunning and gets better with each listen, and I was tired of all the other reviews I'd read saying that they'd lost it. Opeth haven't lost it, they still kill just about every other metal band.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that I completely detest Opeth, and this new album is no exception. 24/100.

I'm good with the high score even if I would rate it 96 myself.
Now if there would only be a review of Still Life on this site as well...

Well I love Opeth and have been to the shops every day this week trying to find this album only to find that I'd got the wrong release date.

So I haven't heard the whole thing yet but will give my verdict as soon as I have. But reading the review I suspect Jason has been a bit over-enthusiastic (hopefully I will be proved wrong! :P ). With hindsight I think Damnation and Deliverance were Opeths two weakest albums so far, and so I hope they can produce something really great with this one. I was definitely encouraged when I saw them live, and the keyboards actually sounded like a perfect addition. They even manged to make "Demon of the Fall" sound better, which I didn't think was possible. This suggests that they will actually become a very worthwhile part of the band, and not just something they thought they might as well throw in.

When I first heard this I thought it was a solid album, but made no immediate impact like BWP did. After several I now think it's a solidly great album, definitely a grower.

I can't help but wonder if some of the people who rate this album as mediocre to shitty do so because of the immense praise constantly thrown on Opeth. It's like they're a victim of their own brilliance. Some people get so sick of hearing vast amounts of mainstream praise bestowed on any metal band that they tend to develop an aversion to them. Oh well, just a thought. I listened to the ecard and, indeed, "Ghost of Perdition" is a great track. I will make a more informed decision after listening to the rest of the album.

I think you may have a point here. Clearly, there are many people who simply don't like their music, but I think a lot of peoples dislike of them stems from the praise they receive from more mainstream sources. I'm not sure they would be getting scores like 25 if they weren't in the position they are in.

That is very true, but people should avoid associating "mainstream" with "not good" because, quite frankly, the "mainstream" isn't always crazy or naive. It is totally fine not liking opeth, I'm not suggesting everyone should, but what people should acknowledge is even if they don't like the music or understand it, that there is indeed musical worth and originality in the music. For example, i don't really like Radio Head, and honestly am really not capable of getting into them, but i still acknowledge that there is something i don't see behind this band that earns them their praise. One thing you guys should know is that i didn't jump the gun on this one - meaning that i've been listening to this album for three weeks now and about 20 - 30 times, and even made several people hear it to see what they thought. I still stand wholeheatedly behind my 98 and has unquestionably become one of my all-time favorite records

another thing i forgot to mention is that i avoided reading other reviews as to not use someone else's ideas about the album. I wanted this one to come straight from my heart and mind.

I knew this review would get peoples blood pumping. I personally think Opeth sucks balls....in the most boring way possible. But thats just how I feel. Feel free to admonish me for it.
