Wow, the hype behind this album was ridiculous and I've seen nothing but Ho Hum reviews.

I don't think 75/100 is that bad of a score, especially since the reviewer holds them in such high esteem. RC do seem to be in a bit of a rut though; I preferred their more guitar-oriented style on albums like Non-Serviam or Sanctus Diavolos then their last few.

I loved it. It was like a more focused version of Aealo, a tad bit better thought out and with the same World music influences that made Aealo a masterpiece. This band can do absolutely no wrong, and unlike Shitthrone have made a career of evolving and showing that they are one of the best black metal bands left standing.

Have to agree with Alex on this, very disappointed. They seem to have gone downhill since the excellent Theogonia, getting less focused and cohesive with each album. Some good moments here, but ultimately pretty dull. Would score low 60s at most.

this was the first RC abum i heard, checked it out after randomly clicking onto the title track on youtube, which i loved.

really enjoyed the title track, Русалка (awesome solos, wish the album had more of them) and Iwa Voodoo, the album does drag a bit though.

i did like the world-music feel in this album, and the gang-shout style vocals. not as in anthrax gang shouts. it's hard to explain. hope you know what i mean here. i'd like to know more about this band. i also heard Nemesis off Theogonia, loved it. where should i start to get to know more abut this band?

If you liked this and the track off Theogonia, maybe try it and Aeolo. The only album of theirs I ever really liked was Thy Mighty Contract, but a totally different stye than the aforementioned latest three that they have put out. Khronos and Sanctus Diabolos were decent enough too. They totally lost me when they hopped on the world music train. Arguments could be made that elements of it were present in the stuff prior to them jumping the cliff, but it was such a radical difference. I'm going to re-listen to those albums and see if I still like them. I really just remember loving their cover of Lucifer Over London: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoOCKBLN21Y

Edit: Shit did not age well. Sanctus Diavolos wasn't bad, but I'd rather just listen to Septicflesh's Communion for this style of metal, or even Moonspell's Night Eternal.

That is funny, because I'd just as soon argue those albums didn't age well either. I'm with you on Thy Mighty Contract (excellent album), but still think Sanctus Diavolos at least has more interesting guitar work than Communion.

Non-Serviam and Triarchy of the Lost Lovers have their moments too, but I'll admit it usually comes down to their guitar breaks.

thanks!

i only heard the first 7 tracks in Aealo. Dub-sag-ta-ke and Fire Death And Fear seem the coolest, oddly enough the more metal and less world music ones. are they closer to what Rotting Christ did earlier in their career?

will try to listen to the whole thing later, of course.

Nothing on AEaolo really sounded like early RC. Early RC had a much more blackened vibe to them, never really did crazy fast piercing tremolos but generally kept the pace. The stuff on Aealo had dashes of power metal through into their melodic death sound. It was totally unappealing to me, so I could be remembering wrong.

quite enjoyed both albums, but the faster and heavier songs on Aealo made it better than this new one, imo, although both sort of lost soem charm heading towards the last few songs. it must be completely difference to experience RT's music in the original order of release, though.

one thing that got to me, especially in the latter songs of Aealo, was how instead of going for a really cool 'rolling' groove (sorry, can't put it any better), they just blasted away. i really hate that, it detracts from the 'flow' of the music. that's why i don't listen to a lot of grindcore, so many otherwise cool riffs ruined by blasting drums.

i never quite felt power metal in Aealo.

now i have to check out Theogonia. really looking forward to it.
