I still need to pick this up(being cash strapped does slow you down when it comes to purchasing new material)

How would you compare this to Design Your Universe which IMHO is their best yet?

I've found the album to be just as strong as DYU so you should feel safe in buying it. Epica perfected their sound on DYU; RFTI could be described as a continuation and maturation of that sound/songwriting. Bottom line it's a damn good Epica album. I'm not sure if you guys live in the US but the last time I was in a Best Buy I think I saw it for $7.99 or $9.99.

I disagree to an extent. It thought it was more progressive. Plus, DYU had a very sharp guitar sound, the guitar sound on their latest was quite odd sounding.

This took me a couple of spins to digest but it's pretty good after having grown on me. I don't think it's on the same level as DYU though who is imho their best album by far.

85/100 is about right. I do prefer the new Xandria though.

finally got around to buying it... it's more progressive than any other album. Some parts remind me of Dream Theater and Symphony X. Some of the vocal patterns sound like Dream Theater. Some of the guitar work has a Between The Buried & Me sound. No. This is a small divergence from DYOU to something much more grandeur.

That's sums it pretty much. They officially became a prog metal band with this one.
Nothing of the old Epica remained here. If your favorite album was DYU, this one would be perfect for you. Otherwise, you can safely pass.
