I'm not sure where the "gothic influences" are at all, this is pretty much atmospheric doom/death metal with strong keys from the early British death doom scene. If you're thinking of goth then that would probably be Revolution DNA, as neither this or any of their albums have anything resembling "goth" apart from misconceptions. These guys have always favored a classical approach to vocals, and they're keyboard usage may get them tangled up with early Century Media transition stuff like Moonspell, Tiamat, mid-era Rotting Christ but these guys are not gothic in any capacity.

That and the score is way too low. The music is far more intricate on this album than anything they've done for years now.

"Long regarded as an essential record within the gothic metal world"

That's how the record label Season of Mist refers to the album, but I can see where there could be other interpretations. Still, even though being deemed "essential", this album quite bored me honestly.

That's one of those label descriptions that appear on the front of cds, at least it appears so with the description's brevity. Its hardly an adequate assessment of the album the album has more in common with neoclassical elements than goth.

I agree with Steve. There's something seriously rank about the scoring on this website - which is of course not solely your doing, Jared - but it's evident when you consider the reviews other Septic Flesh albums have gotten here. 60/100 for this and then their other albums in the eighties and nineties... That doesn't make much sense to me.

I echo what Steve has said. This album is at least in the higher 80's. It is indeed a fantastique album.
