With me being busy and some bands asking for the review I could miss on some albums I really wanted to get my hands on. Flotsam and Jetsam is one band like that. Cody did a nice job covering this release that woudl have been major had it come out a few years back.
I put my quote in as I stopped expecting an unabashed thrashiness fromt he Flots quite some time ago. Dreams of Death is what Flots are oday, progressive thrash band. Yes, the production is very subpar and Eric A.K. will never dazzle us with his vocla range again. But the first half of the album actually held me up quite good. Straight to Hell has a killer riff (even though it borrwos heavily from Saber Dance). Parasychotic, Bleed and Look in His Eyes manage to combine good leads, melodic choruses and periodic thrash outbursts (Parasychotic). Childhood Hero didn't impress me as much as it did Cody, and the rest of the album simply blows, as the band took the melodic choruses of the first part and greatly expanded on them without adding an iota extra. Nascentes Morimar = Horrible Nightmare. Bonus hidden track - ???
With the band members still bickering who knows if there is even a future for the Flots.
I agree with Alex's take. It's a good album 75 is probably about where I would score it too. Definatly better than their last 2 albums. I think the songwriting on this album is really good and I wouldn't say the music is uninspired. 'Straight to Hell' is a killer track! The production is weak yes and unfortunately does hold the music back a bit. You can tell they have been dealt a small budget on a small label.
