The rest is solid no-bullshit heavy rocking metal with Biff's trademark throatworks and a handful of good riffs. I think it's their best album since back in the days. Great production too, it helps.
90/100

This album doesn't reinvent the wheel but it's still fucking awesome and one of my favorite of 2011 so far.

It's old school metal with a modern sound. Great stuff

"this is yet another example of an album that really doesn't have any bad tracks or low points"

Then why give it an 88?

Saxon continues to deliver. I find this to be their most listenable album in years. Great production, memorable songs. Biff can still belt out a tune at his old age. The dual Les Paul guitar attack really cuts through. Nigel's drumming is as invigorating as ever! An album of the month for sure! :dio:

How does this stack up to the new Hell fellas, I've only heard the band's s/t and that is more rock than anything. Great album though

Hell has something quite gothic to its sound, Saxon doesn't.
This is pure heavy metal with a rocking feel and, sometimes, a few Power Metal influences. Actually, the latter aspect is a lot less present on Call to Arms than it was in Saxon's album of the past decade or so.
The best is still to spin this album a few times and make your own mind but, seeing as how everybody seems to agree this is quality work, you'd not be taking an awfully big risk.

I am really impressed with this album. Saxon has definitely recaptured a missing energy or magic that you can hear in the music and Biff has never sounded better.

Few of metal's elder statesmen can boast the impressive late career surge of the mighty Saxon. Since the band abandoned their quest for commercial acceptance in the mid-90's, Biff and the boys have produced album after album of pure fist pumping, old school brilliance. Fans can rejoice yet again as the band delivers the goods with the excellent Call to Arms. From the driving power metal of opener Hammer of the Gods to the NWOBHM-tinged axework of Ballad of the Working Man, there is a little something for everyone on this release. Another jewel in the crown of one of Britain's finest and a treat for fans young and old.
