Heh. I picked up those two Platitude CDs too. Didn't know that the keyboardist was there.

Anyway, I agree with most of it, although I'd comment that Kamelot was great even with Khan's vocal shortcomings. I did have a beef with a couple of filler tracks being included in the setlist while some of the best stuff from Fourth Legacy was left out. But hearing "Karma", "Forever", and that waltz-type thingy they did on Epica ruled!

As for Edguy, greatest concert ever! I mean, if I just wanted to hear the songs, I'd pop in the CD. It was the other aspects of their performance that made it worthwile. Tobias substituting lyrics, clowning around, the guest appearances. Although Kamelot was good, it was basically just listening to Kamelot for a little more than an hour. Edguy was a concert experience and Tobias demanded we all participate.

I skipped them too. PoS is not for everyone, obviously.

Yea, how does one skip PoS? That's a sin, I don't care who you are :D

I think ProgPower has the ability to make a killer lineup next year. Think of all the CD's that have been/are going to be released!

Angra
Dragonland
Heavenly
Lost Horizon (If these guys go, that will just be mindblowing)
Vision Divine
Sonata Arctica
Dragonforce
etc. etc. etc.

Puttin all these bands on the same bill... just plain ol' wicked

Yea Edguy were great. In fact they were the main draw for me (along with Kamelot). Most of the other bands there were groups I liked but didnt go in knowing every single song like I did at PP III with Edguy, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Angra and Silent Force. It was still the most fun I've had at a concert though and maybe next year someone else from here will go to. c'mon guys, I cant be the only metalreviews dude at Prog Power!

Great review Ben! I think you did a great job of capturing what the weekend is all about - having fun, hanging out with friends, and seeing great bands... But like you, I can't wait another 51 weeks until next year.

If anyone is interested, I've posted a bunch of pics from the event:

Adagio
Brainstorm
Into Eternity
Kamelot
Edguy
Savatage
Wuthering Heigths
Tad Morose

Enjoy!

Im gonna point out that yes, my face in the group pic is intentional. I went for the "scrunched metal look" for some unknown reason. Hey! When its 2 in the morning you begin to think alot of things are cool that really arent.

For some reason I doubt Sonata Arctica would play ProgPower. I remember reading somewhere that Tony was convinced that they would finally play the States as someone's support (have to wait for the next Blind Guardian tour then). I could easily see Angra, DragonForce and Lost Horizon though. What would really blow my mind is if they got someone like Vintersorg or Borknagar to play. Even though he's more death/folk, it's still pretty prog. I would skip school if this were the lineup. I really tried to make it last year but it wasn't happening. Having just started med school and being super broke it wasn't gonna happen this year either.

Angra played at PP III and put on a hell of a show. Sonata has had an invite for three years running now. I doubt wed see "normal" Power Metal bands like Dragonforce or Heavenly there, that just doesnt seem to be the trend.

Why not? What was Gamma Ray and Kamelot?

It's Prog and Power metal bands, although I don't think it's even really limited to that. Basically, it's whatever bands Glenn thinks are cool and will sell tickets among the metal crowd without turning off people(like a death or black metal band would unless it was Children of Bodom or something).
