All this band needed was a rejuvenation and the only way to achieve that is to get rid of their main problem which was Tate. Tate don't get me wrong was one of the greatest metal singers around back in the day but he let himself go big time and was dragging the band down with him.
Now they have an album that is steps above what they have done post Empire and I can only get more excited for future releases and I haven't done that since the 80's.
Tate, in his prime, was phenomenal. Just an amazing vocalist. And a great lyricist at one time. He likes to think writing lyrics to the music makes him the sole songwriter, which is of course absurd, but his body of work in that regard can't be overlooked. His hooks and harmonies were great, and the lyrics were just as good.
When his ego got the best of him is when things went to shit. His lyrics, today, are atrocious. He can still write a good hook now and then, but it's never on par with his old stuff. Of course, this has a lot to do with the music, as we see here with the new "real" Queensryche album.
This is a damn good album. Not their best, but very good, a natural modern extension of Empire. There are some stellar tracks on this one. My favorite is "A World Without." Such a brooding tune. It would have fit great on Promised Land, which is one of their best and most underrated albums.
Not a bad song in the lot, though obviously some are weaker than others. Can't wait to see what they do next. Hopefully Tate loses the right to use the name, and I
really hope he didn't ask for this latest court extension so he can squeeze out another misguided turd and call it Queensryche.
