My first Emperor album was "In the Nightside Eclipse". I was one of the rawest albums I ever owned. I didn't listen to it much. They over the years I have expanded my taste in Black/Death Metal bands and must say I have a better acceptance of that release. Then further discovering other Emperor releases, I was easily able to accept this release. The production and progression in songwriting really paved the way for bands like Cradle and Dimmu. I like - Prometheus - The Discipline Of Fire & Demise almost as much!

In my book Emperor doesn't get a lower score than Lamb of God; I mean, how come LoG did a better album in three or four years than Emperor in seven years. LoG latest release is a perfectioned As the Palaces Burn; IX Equilibrium was once again Emperor creating a new sound and re-defining the world of Black Metal. Plus Emperor's carrer was better planned, Emperor didn't release a new album one year after Anthems to make use of their popularity at the moment to sell more records; they took time and released IX Equilibrium two years later. I mean Emperor release four albums in ten years, evolving in each one an presenting new ideas and proposals, not to mention excellent quality; LoG present 3 albums in 3 consecutive years and have already released better albums than the mighty Emperor!?; I don't think so.

I say 96 / 100

There is no universal scale upon which I rate music. This album by Emperor is a different album from LoG.

Y'see, I have seperate scales. I rate it on a black metal scale. On Emperor's personal scale, this is not quite as good as, say, Anthems. However, I felt it not good enough to warrant a higher score.

The LoG album is an excellent metalcore album. Giving it a lower score then the ninety-two it deserves would be unfair. I'm not calling it better.

If you want specific comparison, I'd say that IX Equilibrium is better then Plague Angel. That help?

I'm not here to judge, but I certianly think Emperor is better than LoG. But, I'm biased. Thanks for reviewing Emperor!

I find this album more accessible than Anthems. It's easier to just throw this in and listen to a few songs, where with Anthems I'd rather have an extended period of time to listen to the whole thing. I do prefer Anthems a little bit, but I still love this album.

I know black metal is speedy. But this surely is one of the speediest.

Then again I have never heard a Marduk album. Nor that I really want to.

Is this black metal or what. I actually love some of this album but am pretty ignorant of the whole black metal scene.

Maybe thats a good thing.

Sons Of Northern Darkness is enuff for me.............

Whatever works for you. I think older Marduk is very good, and not that speedy.

Ok, it's different, ok, it isn't as great as the rest of the Emperor albums.. But it's still a fine piece of art!

Agreed, although I'd rate it slightly less, say 88/100. The bonus remix track is :? :D

Having listened to this again, it is good, but:-

1) It hasn't got that otherworldliness that the first two albums had. Listening to them, you're completely in thrall. Here, not. This is where Emperor stopped being gods and became just another band, imo. They are brilliant songwriters, I'll give them that.

2) Ihsahn is really, being truthful, a shitty vocalist. On this album his clean vox make me wince, and his yelping gets pretty ropey very quickly. What the hell? I know he can do better, so why doesn't he?

3) Some parts of songs are just not good enough. The riffs in particluar, too repetitive.

So, I'm lowering my score as a result. I hope Prometheus is better...

I own this album, but I've only listened to it once. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
