I will have to listen to this, beeing a huge sepultura fan. I also miss the good old Arise Days. Like Al, Arise is one of the albums that drove me into metal and one of my all time favorites.

I downloaded this album the other day to hear it. After 3 and their last album, i had to hear what Soulfly were sounding like for this release.
Like the review says, this album is damn heavy and could be Soulfly's best album to date. I think that with this album, Soulfly can drop the nu-metal label that some people have put on them.
I too am a Sepultura fan, not as much anymore, but back when Max was in the band, the Seps were one of my favourite bands.
I went with Max over to Soulfly and religiously bought their 1st two albums before i started to move away from that type of sound.
I've always kept an interest in both bands, thus my reason for downloading Dark Ages. A very good album that will impress fans of both old Max Sepultura between Arise and Roots and fans of Soulfly from around their debut album and Primative, without the experimental stuff.

Soulfly has always been a band that I liked, but could really care less about either way. I own their first three albums, but I don't own Prophecy, and never had any desire to even check it out. The same feelings applied to this album. Then I read this review last night before it was posted and was VERY curious.

Every Sunday night at midnight Music Choice updates their videos on On-Demand, so I always check out what's new. Well, I came across the video for "Frontlines" and I watched it. UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE!! I could not fucking believe I was hearing Soulfly! It was a completely different band! I was hearing Sepultura. Plain and simple. The song is sick!

I was shocked, so much so that I just bought this album before coming into work today. I listened to the first minute or two of each song and I'm floored. The album sounds amazing. I can already tell this is Soulfly's best album to date, and it sounds like what Sepultura fans have wanted from Sepultura ever since Max left. Don't quote me on that, but that's my first impression.

This sounds like a killer album. Great review.

Soulfly is a band I've always had mixed feelings towards. I always enjoyed the whole tribal thing on Roots and Chaos AD (Arise had some of it too on songs such as Altered State). And especially being into both thrash metal and camping/nature (yeah, I know, two totally unrelated topics), I should probably LOVE Soulfly.

Unfortunately, I don't. I guess it's because Max just never seemed to take the whole tribal metal thing much further with Soulfly than he did with Sepultura. Thus, the novelty wore off after a while. Not to mention the fact that (personally) Prophecy depresses me. Not because it's a bad album but because of the rather depressing time period in which I was listening to it.

Nonetheless, judging from the rave reviews I've read for this album, it sounds to me like Soulfly is finally living up to their true potential. I'll definitely check it out and hopefully hear the Soulfly I've been long hoping for.

Ok this album is good for Soulfly but still it cannot even be vcompared with old sepultura like morbid visions or arise, maybe with the shitty mainstream new one...

On another note, I just found out today that Soulfly's debut and Sepultura's Roots have both been certified Gold here in the states (meaning over 500,000 copies shipped). Awesome.

This is easily the best Soulfly album yet. Hopefully they continue down this road in the future. There are a lot of enjoyable songs on here.

When you compare it to old Sepultura, are you talking about albums like Roots and Chaos A.D., or albums like Beneath the Remains and Schizophrenia. If the former, eww. If the latter, sweet, though I'd listen to it with a grain of salt...

I'd say it was most similar to Arise and Chaos AD. Roots was more similar to the early Soulfly releases I think. Schizophrenia and Beneath the remains were far more raw with a smattering of death metal influence, which this is not.

Well, Arise and one or two songs off Chaos A.D. were good, so I'll check it out. Thanks.

I just listened to this album right now. I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised. This is easily the best Soulfly album yet. I wouldn't say it sounds like Arise-era Sepultura (save for may be Frontlines - despite the fact that its intro sort of reminds me of Dog Faced Gods by Testament). It's more like Chaos AD-era Sep but (surprise!) thrashier (not to be confused with "better"). I'll definitely buy this record sometime soon. Finally, Soulfly has realized their true potential!

I enjoy this one a lot. Frontlines is such a damn good song that gets my head banging every time.
