Yes. I welcome this album and the return of Amorphis to a sound like the one they had in Elegy. I have to listen more to it, but I can say the album is really good.

I was amazed with the quality of these songs! The new singer is fantastic, the growls in the track Perkele and The Smoke are great, it made me remember their old stuff! The feeling in this album is somewhat near Tuonela, which is my favourite album.

I hope they will create a follow up to this one, and I hope the singer evolves and uses his harsh voice more. I bet this album will sell more than their 2 previous efforts.

This is an excellent album! They melded their progressive death metal stuff with their proggy atmospheric stuff perfectly! It's a great album. The death metal growl are awesome, a great surprise. I really love the power metal-like chorus of "Shame Flesh," very different for the band and it's awesome.

This was a big surprise for me and it's great to see Amorphis back making quality Metal. The new vocalist is much better suited to the band as well, as Pasi's extreme vocals sound better in Ajattara anyway. I'm very pleased with this CD.

I enjoyed this return to form as well. Thanks to eyesore for pointing it out to me. I really like the new vocalist too.

If you like the old stuff and the newer stuff I think this would immediately be to your liking.

Well, it's similar to Elegy, but you have to hear Tuonela, Far From The Sun and Am Universum to kind of understand the change in musical direction. All are great albums, I believe.

I heard about half of one song, and that was enough to convince me that this band kicked ass.

No, and I know there is a 100 page long thread of them ring around these forums. I just haven't had an urge to check them out until now. All it takes is a good review.

Basically there are two eras of Amorphis. The first consists of these albums:

Image Image Image

The Karelian Isthmus, Tales From The Thousand Lakes and Elegy. It's like progressive folk-influenced death metal. They got a lot more progressive on Elegy, kind of like prog-rock and folk meets death metal. Then they changed it up on these albums:

Image Image Image

Tuonela, Am Universum and Far From The Sun. Death metal is basically gone on these albums. There are a few songs where death metal vocals are used, but generally just in parts. The albums are very much like what Anathema is doing now, even some latter day Katatonia, I guess. Very different from their early stuff, but still great.

I think all three later albums are great, but people have their favorites. I've heard people say Far From The Sun sucks and Tuonela is great just as much as I've heard Tuonela sucks and Am Universum is great, or any variation. So it's like when people have opinions on what songs are best on an album and they're all different, generally a good indication of a great album. I think each album is damn good.

So, Eclipse is like a mix of both eras. It's more experimental than Elegy, but it has more in common with that album. This is truly a great, great band. Just read what I wrote so you know what you're getting yourself into.

They also have some EPs that are worth checking out:

Image Image Image

Privilege Of Evil, Black Winter Day and My Kantele. Privilege Of Evil is a straight up brutal death metal EP. Black Winter Day is like the stuff on Tales From The Thousand Lakes and My Kantele is from the Elegy sessions and is basically a continuation of that album. All are worth the money. Their early-early stuff is all brutal death metal, but aside from a 7" it's all hard as hell to find.

DIGGIT!

After typing all that stuff about this band I decided to make an MP3 CD so I could play in my truck, so I break out all my CDs and I notice that fucking Timo Tolkki mixed and engineered their Privilege Of Evil EP. Weirdness.

I wasn't speaking of weird people, though. But now that we actually are, I agree. The dude is a couple nipples short of a titty.

I was referring to our PM conversation.

I heard he talks to himself during recording sessions.
