Although it sounds immature and a bit silly, does anyone else think they sold out?

Good Review, I agree for the most part. Though I have to say 'A Loss for Words' is one of the best songs ever by the band IMO.

I am also a huge Evergrey fan and am a little disappointed by the simplicity of the songs but do like the heavier production. I hope on the next album they work some of those complexities back in the music. Overall though I do like MMA a little better than TIC. Though it is not nearly as good as RD, ISFT, and SDT. I have read a lot of reviews that really hate on this album. While there are some things I don't like, I still enjoy this album quite a bit and would rate it 86/100.

I also met Tom after the show in Grand Rapids this year. He was very cool and chatted with me and my friend for a couple minutes.

Peace....

Ummm... :P

Good band, though, from the songs on their MySpace at least. I'll have to look into them a bit more.

As a long-time fan of the band I agree with you. This album has been critically acclaimed but I just don't get the same feeling and atmospheric vibe from this album as the others. It's my opinion that Evergrey peaked around "Solitude, Dominance, Tragedy" and "In Search of Truth" and has slowly been going downhill since, but atleast the trademark Evergrey sound has been there and that made up for alot.

But just as you said, the album really aint that bad, though atleast I hope this album is a temporary flirt with other parts of the metal scene and that they find their way back to their roots as soon as possible.

Alex, you really must be a dedicated Evergrey fan to write such a passionate review. Great job man, 100/100 for the review itself.

The first time i heard MMA i felt just like you did, being a fan of the band, but in time it grew on me. Despite the songs heavier and simplistic nature, Tom's voice still delivers tons of emotions and the standard Evergrey hooks are still there, just harder to find. In the case of MMA words like "different" and "sold-out" means nothing when the music is excelent.

My interest in this band woke again this summer when I saw them live at Mälarrocken, to bad it was only a 45 minutes show though...

I'm not sure on what to think of this album, it hasn't yet caught me like the earlier have, especially Recreation Day, but I will listen to it some more before making a final judgement.

The only Evergrey albums Im familier enough with to rate are: Recreation Day, The Inner Circle, and MMA. Ive heard the rest, just not all that much. This album compared to all Ive heard does seem simpler, but its not such a huge blow as some would think because MMA is still a kickass album, maybe even more enjoyable than The Inner Circle.

No. How did they sell out? Because it's a little different? That's not selling out.

I like this album, but don't find it to be as good as their earlier albums. I would rate it a 70/100. I liked Inner Circle better, this album seems like they were still in that melodic Inner Circle headspace and then tried to incorporate some of the earlier heaviness, but it came out a little faded in the wash.

Very good, though.

For me it's a 100/100.Just a perfect hook laden, dark and melodic album.

Well I don't think they have sold out but they are definately not as good as they used to be. Their last 2 albums have been a deception for me.

I love the Dark Discovery, Solitude Dominance Tragedy, In search of Truth and Recreation Day better than anything they have done lately. They're missing a little something in their music that used to
pull me into their universe.

lol, yeah, sure.....not. They are just chaning, great bands can change and even go commercial without selling out. You could see this coming as far back as In search of Truth. You know what, i might be the only one, but I think the Inner Circle is one of the best, and most depressing albums of all time. This one I dn't know if I will buy or not, Everygrey is awesome and all but damn they grind me down sometimes.

Inner Circle is indeed an excellent album. Not heavy like earlier stuff, but still a great album!

i like this band but i'm not a big fan by any means.

i have Recreation Day (The Great Deceiver = pwn), The Inner Circle and SDT, and none of them is a bad album.

i'd check this out but there is some earlier stuff in their discography i haven't heard yet and i want to see the band change the way they did.

I don't think they merely 'changed'. They wanted to appeal to the mainstream audience with this one. There is nothing wrong with that, only this time the music changed along with that desicion, and got by far less interesting. Things that made them unique in the past, it's gone. All thats left is some very accessable "light version" of themselves. I guess it's enjoyable for what it is, but it isn't the band I fell in love with when I first heard Recreation Day.

They have had the commercial edge before, I admit that, but it was insignificant and just a tiny aspect of the sound.

Just listened to this for this first time. I like it. Like everybody has said it's simpler than their old stuff but I still think it's a good album.

I don't think I will buy this one, it seems to have moved too far away from what I liked about Evergrey. I find The Inner Circle to be their best effort to date, followed by In Search of Truth. I like concept albums in general, in case I haven't mentioned it earlier.
