Welcome Adam :dio: Best debut review ever.

I love this album. One of the easier Funeral Doom albums to get into, I recommend it to everyone.

Evoken "grew up". They made their sound easier to get into, some of their firm tricks, like echoing bass fingering, can be found in their former strength only on "Mournful Refusal", they added some psychodelical fragments, while still remained an example for others on how to play good doom metal. They became professionals, but for me they lost their charm, a charm of an amateur that could be felt on their previous releases. Anyway, a good album.

P.S. I miss Dee's reviews....

I do too. I will try to fill some of the doom void.

I don't get the sense that Evoken made their sound more accessible here. They merely continued the working formula they had on Quietus. Trust me, an Evoken release will never be "easy to get into" for most listeners. I mean, it is still funeral doom.

They started to develop that formula on Quietus, but now this formula became a bit too dominant over their well-known dissonances. They followed the same path as Esoteric. Evoken became closer to those brits not only in sound, but also in means of expressiveness. And I think their symphonical part may grow over time. No one can say if it's a good or a bad thing right now, but I personally think guys should experiment on a bit different field.

Btw, nice review. Only when it comes to doom, I like the song-by-song structure best. But that's just me.

Yeah, you definitely have a point. We'll just have to wait and see (and cross our fingers!). I generally do song by songs for a band who already has a review on this site with a worthwhile description of their history and sound. However, some people scoff at song by song descriptions regardless (see the thread for my Lamb of God review). If I was to review, say, the new Boris album, I would probably employ a song by song descriptive style. On the other hand, if it was the new Dragonauta, I may take a more generally descriptive tone.

Glad you made it to the big show Adam! I'm going to enjoy reading your reviews, and I'm quite happy this one got the proper treatment it deserved.

I've been interested in hearing these guys because reverend bizarre's guitarist said that Evoken shouldn't be confused with real doom metal like candlemass and solitude aeturnus :P but then I heard they were really good.

If you go to their myspace, you can hear samples of their new album that is coming out in October. All of their albums so far have been really good.

Couldn't find this album anywhere, so I had to go with Quietus. It tastes gud.

Will Tyranny's Tides Of Awakening ever get reviewed, Adamz?

I somehow just noticed this, sorry. It has been reviewed, by Dee. Enjoy!
