Boris are pretty cool, I like how they range from writing fairly normal sludgey/droney songs to stuff like Absolutego.

What exactly is sludge/drone metal? I've never heard of it until now...

Sludge is usually comprised of slow to medium pace riffs with a lot of low end and distortion. Try to find some samples of Isis, which would be a pretty good example.

Drone is a very esoteric genre which is a bit harder to describe. Generally, you'll find a lot of drawn out slow riff sequences with lots of feedback and other ambient noise. However, many different sounding groups can all be considered drone. Try to find some Earth or Sunn O))). Hope that helps.

Yep, drone became "pupular" in the 60s, when the downtown interest in classical Indian music gained weight. The early minimalists experimented with it and it later found its way into other music, such as when Dream Syndicate minimalist John Cale entered the Velvet Underground.

Anyone heard the Sunn/Boris collaboration? It was really good, I didn't totally enjoy it but it creeped me the hell out.

Very good album indeed. I prefer the psychedelic aspect of boris more than the drone aspect though..

Not emaning to start an argument or anything Zad but that post to me came out like you were condescending the guy and then reccomending him two very obvious drone bands whilst not being very knowledgable on the genre.

Nah, no worries. He was just saying that Altar is a good drone album. I haven't heard it as its not out yet, but it should be good considering its a joint effort between two of the top drone acts around. Did it leak Zad?

lol I didn't see Zad's post. I dont think he was so much pointing out obvious drone bands as saying that their collaboration kicks ass, which it does.

Well like I said, it wasn't meant as a dig, I just thought it was a bit like: You wanna ehar good heavy metal? Listen to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Coming from someone who isn't big on ehavy metal.
