Hey Brent,

Excellent review. Although I'm a fan of Chuck's work I've never taken the time to look into this release.

I do want to say something though. Your comments in the review make it sound as though this album is a future classic. For instance, you mentioned that all the songs are killer, yet this album only got an 83. Don't get me wrong 83 is a good score, but I'm wondering what prevented you from giving this album 90 and above? What didn't you like about the album?

By the way, please don't take this as a negative comment regarding your review. I just want to hear what could have been improved.

Thanks and have a happy holidays!

I understand what you are getting at completely. I didn't take it as negative at all. Any score from 80 - 89 on here is considered "VERY GOOD". While this album is Very Good, it doesn't let's say warrant something over 90, which is considered "A MASTERPIECE". It is good, good as hell, but I wouldn't call it a Masterpiece. I would save something like that for lets say... 3 Inches of Blood, Jon Oliva's Pain, JP - Painkiller, Iced Earth - Burnt Offereings/Glorious Burden, Death - Human, etc... You should definitly get your hands on this though, and the website that I spoke of where I got it really cheap is www.lasercd.com, which is The Laser's Edge Webstore. Look in the bargain bin, which by the way is where it SHOULDN'T be.

Thanks for the reply. I think I know what your saying. I guess this album is missing that special little personal element that is really difficult to capture and define. We all have albums like that. That's the way I feel about Therion's latest album. I can't really find anything wrong with the it, but I still wouldn't call it a masterpiece. Although, I not sure exactly why I feel that way. Anyways, I'll have to check this one out.

By the way, I think The Glorious Burdon is a masterpiece as well. Although, I didn't really care that much for Burnt Offerings, other then the title track and Dante's Inferno. I've never understood why people are so crazy about that cd.

Last December is great as well.. but then you have a few average tracks. Perhaps people are drawn in by the artwork just like with Iron Maiden.

Probably because it was the first cd that featured Barlow on vocals.

Barlow did add to that cd, but really what i liked about it was that it had the "darkest" atmosphere of any other Iced Earth release, and the production wasn't THAT great, so it kind of caught the band in a raw form. As for the new Therion album, it is my favorite by them. But yet again, i only have vovin, secret of the runes, and the new ones.

Burnt Offerings got me into Iced Earth, and when after that Dark Saga and SWTWC came out and didn't disappoint I started to respect IE. Horror Story was horrible though. Burnt OFferings has that dark atmosphere (somebody already mentioned it) and it is what adds that something special. I heard an interview with Schaffer though where he himself castigated that album.

Yea, it was me who mentioned it. It got me into them as well, hearing Dante's Inferno from Alive in Athens and getting it very soon after. But yes, Jon does hate that album... which sucks because I love it and since he hates it nothing ever gets played off of it.

Thanks for posting that link. They have some good stuff real cheap on that site. Do you know any other places to pick up good cheap metal besides Laser's Edge and Century Media Online?
